when my family moved to Canada back in 1998, my youngest brother was 7 months old. He speaks both Korean and English fluently. I think the ability of an immigrant to maintain the ability to speak their native language fluently really depends on their parents’ approach to their children, and I’m very grateful for my parents for making sure that we never lost our Korean, and also for for my mother being such a strong woman when my father passed away in 2003.

Very true. Another thing is, is if you "need" to speak the language, there's a large number of Spanish speakers in my town, but in the neighborhood I live in, there's only my grandma and uncles (but then I stopped talking to my uncles in Spanish). I wanted to speak English more, so my Spanish was getting worse. But now I go to church every Sunday, Tuesday, and (almost) every Saturday. They speak only Spanish there with some people speaking English (most speak English but choose to speak Spanish since they're more comfortable with it). I've been attending church for almost 3-4 years so my Spanish has rapidly gotten better (just by hearing it alone got me speaking Spanish more and I learned a lot more vocab). I went to El Salvador only twice (I want to go a lot more in the future if I have the money) and since I didn't go consistantly I thought that I didn't need to speak Spanish. I regret it a lot now, but I'm still trying to get fluent at least before college.

Celina Moradian I grew up not speaking a word of English at home and I turned out fine, as have millions upon millions of people all around the world, who immigrated to different countries. You’re literally robbing your child of a second language - skill they can use in the future, by not speaking to them in their mother tongue.

Celina Moradian so sorry, I realised I wrote that a little too forcefully haha Same! When I have kids, I want my kids to learn my language and if my husband has a dif language, his as well. I know a couple who are Spanish and Hungarian, Dad speaks in Spanish and Mom speaks in Hungarian and now the kids are fluent in 3 languages thanks to their parents initiative. Kids learn English easily from their surroundings in English speaking countries, they media and school, beyond homework help, there’s no reason not to talk to them in their mother tongue. Here’s to having bi or lol tri lingual kids in the future 🍻

I don't understand why immigrants migrate to a different country and expect their kids to know their language. If you want your kids speaking your own language then stay in your own country don't move to foreign ones. The same thing goes with culture. Be prepared for your kids born in the new country to disown the culture from your old country. They will start adapting to the culture of the new country. They have to in order to survive socially and in the work force.

I think it really depends on the family and you can’t blame the parents. In Australia, most Korean parents speak Korean to their children but since their children spend most of their time outside of home speaking English, it’s inevitable for the child to slowly lose the language. Also, my parents were always busy working to provide to my family so it was rare for me to have long conversations with them. Luckily for me, I decided to practice my Korean intensively since 10th grade and exponentially improved but it’s not the case for many other Korean immigrant families. It’s not that the parents don’t want their children to learn the language, it’s just difficult because being an immigrant isn’t easy.

my sister can relate lol. among my siblings i can speak korean fluently, my oldest sister is almost fluent and my other sister literally cannot. its so strange to see how we're all at different stages even though we grew up in the same house but it depends on how much you immerse yourself in your culture. i def learned a lot of my korean through dramas and shows as well as korean friends but my sister only hung out with english-speakers and therefore can speak elementary level korean. regardless of the fact that my parents spoke korean in the house my sister never properly caught on.

H I speak, read, and write both English and Chinese. And I’m raising three bilingual kids. I didn’t say 6 year olds don’t speak fluently. I said most 6 year olds have trouble communicating complex and nuanced ideas whether technically or socially.

H My oldest is 6, and I’d say he was slower than his peers around 3-4, caught up by 5, and once reading is introduced around 6 he is zooming ahead. The hard part is finding the time, since aside from school work there’s also sports and arts etc. It also depends alot on how good the parents are in both languages. I often intentionally explain more complex concepts and ideas in both languages to build those neural pathways. Once the kid can connect those ideas growth comes in explosive spurts. It also depends on the environment. We currently live in Asia and the ability to speak English gets alot of positive reinforcement in school and from peers. And finally it helps alot that my wife is a full-time mom. She mostly speaks English only and has some experience teaching. But in the end I’d say speaking an extra language at any level can’t hurt.

John Cho, I am glad I found someone that I can relate. I was born and raised in America; however, my Vietnamese vocabulary is around first-grade level. I speak a Southern Vietnamese and the national language of Vietnam is Northern dialect. There are words I still don’t recognize and I will be lost. I would need a translator when I do go to Vietnam.

@@bloodycinephile Koreans can polite but are very nationalistic/homogenous. I can imagine some maybe even wary (or jealous) of Koreans who grew up outside of Korea. Similarly, American westerners may think someone that speaks english with an accent sounds "cute and hilarious, infantile" but they often forget that speaking more than one language is really a sign of amazing brain power.

I'm Korean-American, was born in the States, and my parents are both fluent in English so I never spoke Korean growing up but started learning it little by little in high school and college, then moved to Korea after college, studied the language and lived there for five years. I am now fluent in the language and speak it with my grandmother who speaks very limited English. However, my sister can't speak it at all and only understands a few words. I think there are a lot of Korean-Americans like John Cho who speak the language very poorly, and a lot of Koreans are quick to judge them, but that's not fair because you have to understand how they grew up and the pressure to assimilate. Anyway, for Korean-Americans who grew up not speaking Korean, I think it should totally be your choice whether you want to learn the language or not - if you're interested in learning in, then great and if not, that's okay too.

Its exposure + getting the opportunity to use it. I came to the U.S. when I was 4, but ny English is at a University level in Korea. Whrn I visit Korea often people do not know I was raised here from accent alone ( they would have to get to know me and realize culturally I am different). You can do it! But it will take lots of work. I did not simply retain my Korean passively. I had to work hard to constantly use it. I am trying to learn a 3-4th language when I can! But again, takes work and most importantly, using it! Best way to learn a language is to make friends and confidently use the language even if you make mistakes!

My parents would’ve spoke English to me if they knew the language or mainly my mom, her English isn’t fluent enough to hold a conversation so she had no choice but to talk to my and my sisters in Vietnamese. And for my dad he WANTED us to be cultured bc his side of the family is the most traditional family ever, but also they didn’t worry about English too much since we were gonna be expose to it a lot anyways 😅

Wonbo Shim “Talk To Me In Korean” is a website,and KZbin channel dedicated to teaching people the Korean Language . And “Italk” Is a language exchange site that also has Actual teachers in many different languages. I found my Korean teacher on there. “KakaoTalk” is a social app that many Koreans use and “Naver” is the Korean version of I guess google. It’s good for learning to read Korean cause well... it’s all in Korean lol. Watching Dramas and Korean television on “Viki” or “Dramafever” let’s you learn vocabulary quickly. But if you want to hear how sentences are said naturally watch tv programs. “Running Man” “Hello Counselor” and “knowing Bros” are really popular. In deciding to learn Korean I’ve learned much more about the country itself between the good and the bad. I’ve fell head over heels. Lol. Good luck!

my parents have no idea how to teach our native language to their kids, mostly because everyone in our family tends to learn english first, later learning our national language and local language at school or just playing with friends. that’s kind of a problem for me and my sister since uh. we didn’t grow up in the same country as them. i only learned when i went back to study there, and even then it took months of deliberate and mindnumbing study to even begin to understand

I moved to uk when I was 7 at 2004 and whenever I speak korean people comment how I speak like a 7 from 2004 as in I don’t speak any slangs understand it and use some terms that were more popular during 2004

I lived as a nomad as a kid and I moved to different places every two year and I lost the ability to speak my mother tongue language properly during those times. I've returned back to my country for a few years now and regained it all. He just needs to stay in Korea for a year or so to get it all back..

i can relate. I have to talk to my grandfather through translations from my mom but haha in my case my parents were born here too, Ive never been to mexico yet people expect me to still know. If i went on national television saying this idk how many mexicans would accuse me of being ashamed and a traitor. I guess asians face less pressure to keep the language.

I'm in a similar situation but what I've noticed is Mexicans are shocked to find out that I don't speak Spanish because they're ignorant. They had a bad education and don't understand how sociology works. They don't understand that a person's culture and customs are dependent on were they are raised not were their ancestors originated. I myself don't understand how they fail to understand this.

My brother went to America when he was in high school and now he is 40. and he forgot how to speak Korean. Speaking native language is really depends on his environment.

I understand his struggle, I can understand(Haitian creole) , write it but, my pronunciation needs work. I’ve been putting in the personal work to do it, my parents have 5kids ..after the first one they got lazy(I’m number 4)
