@@fyrchmyrddin1937 There was a university professor in the 60s who created a group to promote freedom of speech and expression, it was called FIRE (foundation of Individual Right in Education) and he saw that after this got the footing it needed, he saw them change their tune and go from "Free speech for all" to "OUR speech only". I think that Cleese is very similar to the professor, he's a guy who holds true to the ideals of freedom of speech and expression and knows that means it will also come from people he doesn't like and hates that there's people championing "free speech" while its only "their speech".
@fyrchmyrddin19372 жыл бұрын
@@UncensoredScion I'm familiar with FIRE, and think that's a mischaracterization... because if there's one thing so-called contemporary Progressive "higher education" is, it's NOT open-minded thinking. In keeping w/ Cleese, from his past comments he fell for the falsehood that the Left were the "open minded" ones back in the 1950's. Many people confused "Libertarian" with "Libertine" and imagined that Timothy Leary was somehow a great thinker or that Woodstock was some deep & meaningful event.
@UncensoredScion2 жыл бұрын
@@fyrchmyrddin1937 I'm not saying FIRE is for that I'm saying the creator of FIRE started it to try and push for that, that the state of modern higher education has become "we are correct no matter what and you are required to do as you're told." And I'll be upfront with you here, Libertarians are not good people, Libertarians are cowards who are unable to make a decision of the least difficult and work from within to better a side and allow vileness and disreputable behaviour to spread. The Libertarian Philosophy is fart huffing self-aggrandisement. Because if a person were truly for the things the Libertarians say they are for, they would not seek to split a vote further but to better the choice that is least different from their views. They are no better than the Left in their arrogance and no better than the Right for their cowardice at refusing to say their opinions.
@fyrchmyrddin19372 жыл бұрын
@@UncensoredScion Ah, your earlier part about FIRE was unclear. Yes, higher education has become lock-step, and I would venture to use the term "fascist". I personally like *some* Libertarian philosophy, but agree that not only are they self-aggrandizing but, by treating perfect as the enemy of good, allow evil free play (much like those who found Trump so vile that they voted Democrat). I occasionally read Reason, but was more than a little offended when they recently went on a "military = babykiller" rant. Unfortunately there is no political constituency for "Constitutional Conservative" at present, so for my part, I choose whatever seems the least damaging.

Thank you! Someone else caught it besides me! All these people saying he is a legend, this and that - far from it. A life of God-given talent ending in an empty shell. Bowing to more Hollywood demons, rejecting Christ and not even thinking twice about it. He needs our prayers, not praise. God alone deserves praise.

I just HAD to look up the "Fish Slapping" and it was hysterical because it was sooo silly, and done with such seriousness!! Then I noticed a KZbin video where a 15 year old kid dreamed of doing "fish slapping" with Mr. Cleese, it was amazing!!! I loved the stupidity of it!!! Thanks!

I remember vividly the 1st episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, in 1969. I remember where I was, what I was doing and even what I said ... after sitting mesmerized and alternately laughing hysterically for 30 minutes. That puts Python at a level equivalent to the death of Kennedy ... sorry JFK.

As a huge BB fan as well as a Python/Cleese, I have to say that this was one of the most uncomfortable interviews that I seen in years. Kyle an Ethan seem to have only scant knowledge of Python (how do you not know of the ‘fish slapping’ sketch?) and John (an Atheist) seemed to be out of his element. As a Christian, myself, putting John on the spot and trying to convert him, a bit over the top. John has definitely mellowed over the years, had this been attempted when he was younger, he would in typical Cleese fashion, raked them over the coals.

i was also SHOCKED that the BB guys had never seen - nor even heard of - the Fish Slapping Dance! how could this bee??? ;-) i also agree with you: the BB guys ought to dispense with asking their guests if they would accept Jesus Christ on the interview... as if doing so is simply a matter of speaking a few words. seems to me, they ought to know better, and i say this also as a Christian myself. regardless, i love Python AND BB! 8-)

i would have been a bit more smooth and jokey about it, turn it into a joke about him being a heathen for not being catholic, satire and especially satire about Catholics is right up cleese's alley, even back in the day.

Cleese is a smart and decent man, forever to be thanked for Fawlty Towers. No finer comedy was attenpted. Quite the polymath, his psychology insights re families etc showed him to be a smart guy. Did very well out of his managerial courses for businesses.

There are many more, like Ricky Gervais, the late Norm MacDonald, Roseanne Barr, and even William Shatner (who officially made his debut as a standup comedian in 2016 at age 85) has finally stood up against cancel culture and wokeness. Bill Maher recently started to speak out against woke cultural vandalism too, but he may just be an opportunist who knows that woke activism is losing the cultural war (I guess I just don't trust Bill Maher).
