The click-and-point adventure game Starship Titanic. Released in 1998, the brainchild of Douglas Adams with a cast line up of Terry Jones and the likes of John Cleese, this gem of a game put a surreal art deco to the classic genre.
Word of Warning: It is advised not to poke the bomb with the stick

If you try to break the glass with the hammer, you get another series of great, smartass remarks.

25 years ago, this was a ridiculously-goofy, vastly enjoyable (assuming you're a fan of HHGTTG, Monty Python, and/or just a human appreciating fun and silly humor) piece of art and thoughtfulness. And general hominin advice -- Never poke large bears or explosives with sticks. Over 300,000 years, our only constant output of such is it always ends badly for the human. Cheers!

Funny how John Cleese was offered to voice Rincewind in the Discworld games, turned it down saying 'I don't do video games, f*ck off' then he does this. Guess he had ex-wives and bills to pay off.

First Discworld came out around 95 and he did a video game in 96, but that was a parody of computer games, a Monty Python game, he maybe converted himself like that british guy who wanted to know about islam so he can mock the muslims better and ended up converting to islam. I don't know but maybe he accepted the role because it was a joke and ended up liking it. Also in mid 90's the video games became a mainstream business. Like there was a time when movie actors didn't do tv-shows and nowadays it is normal.

Wow! THEY invented that kind of story telling. NOT Portal 2!

Volvox Yep. I've actually said that the Portal games are influenced by the late Douglas Adams on multiple occasions. I wish he got more credit considering that the Portal games are more successful that the games he was involved with prior to his passing.

@mamuburaa: I wouldn't call it dumbed down, except in the case that it's much easier to get through the Portal games than the games Douglas wrote for. I think part of the reason his games couldn't find a wider audience is because they were a little too difficult for many players to actually finish, to the point of frustration. In the Hitchhiker game, you have to grab something important from the Vogon ship before you are forced to leave, but it isn't immediately apparent that it is and It's easy to miss. If you don't have that object in your inventory when you are on the Heart of Gold, you end up in a no win situation and have to reset the game. In fact the reason Starship Titanic takes place entirely on one ship was so the player could avoid that issue. On the other hand, a healthy chunk of the first Portal game begins with a lengthy tutorial that allows the player to get used to the mechanics before they get thrown off the deep end in terms of difficulty.

I absolutely adored this game, bought it on release 25 years ago and devoured it...but The Digital Village "invented" this type of story? C'mon now. They used it to great advantage in a 'puter game, but sure didn't create it. For that, go back 1,000's of years, and an anthropologist with even scant attention to first year studies will tell you storytelling with humorous narratives, self-aware and occasionally bordering on ribaldry without going too vulgar, shows globally in vetted writings of multiple bio-geographic ancestries. ;) Cheers.

Funnier thing is that the bomb still goes off even if you never arm it, iirc. So you're forced to arm it on purpose (and disarm) if you don't want the explosion anyway.
