I will celebrate my auzzie day! No one should take that away from us! I am not racist just the love to celebrate my country! Indigenous people can get way more support then me as a caucasian as a struggling individual with employment and education. Where are my resources and support for health, education and living circumstances like indigenous people? I LOVE AUSTRALIA DAY AND WILL CELEBRATE IT WHETHER IT IS A NATIONAL RECOGNISED HOLIDAY OR NOT!

We can't undo what's been done. What is needed is to accept the facts and learn from our mistakes. Americans now now need to realize they can no more force their democracy on other peoples in war than they could their culture by conquering. It's time to get over our superiority complex and leave other countries alone.

One day the idea that governments, laws and their armed enforcement can positively affect the behaviour of people and resolve disputes in society, will be received with the same incredulity and ridicule that medieval tortures and witch burning can purge an individual from sin and cleanse society.

Australia is in a constant state of occupation as is all of North America. The occupiers will never see it that way but it doesn't change the facts. These continents were taken by force from those who already inhabited them. The indigenous people suffered greatly as a result.

I will also say I had no hand in creating any of them, and will not be talked to as though I had. Virtually nowhere on earth has escaped conquest, and in North America, the tribes where conquering and waging war on each other for thousands of years before the Europeans showed up, and the only difference is, Europe was better able to do it. Yes the indigenous people have suffered, and yes they continue to suffer, but none of that is my fault, and at least some of it is theirs.

Many cultures are dissapearing everyday from the earth so I agree with you. The aboriginals of Canada are now just barely making progress...but its still just a small piece of the cake...Until all barriers are removed and a chance has been given to everyone fairly, then our own stereotypes will continue.
@riderlibertas2580

There is a big difference between tribal conflicts and occupation and no blame can be laid on an indigenous people for their inability to adapt to our corrupt culture. Then, or now after many generations of subjugation. I didn't point any fingers in my initial post, is there some reason you took it so personally?

I just browsed past this video, and just thought I'd comment about America having a black president doesn't hold the same weight as an aboriginal prime minister. African Americans are just as much immigrants as European Americans, if there was a Native American president it would be a different story.

Do you honestly think that you, as an aboriginal person have any more right to live in this country than me, a white person. I was born here. This land is my home as much as it is yours. I don't identify with anywhere else. I haven't attempted to destroy any Aboriginals. My point is: Just because your people have been here for thousands of years doesn't mean that the current generation can say "this land is ours you have stolen it." As far as I'm concerned I haven't stolen a thing.

phillus69: Just 1 question for you: If "there is now way australia is in anyway racist towards the aborigines" (quoting you) why did the Howard Government have to suspend the Racial Discrimination Act in order to carry out the Intervention?

In an ideal Australia, the probability of the Prime Minister being Aboriginal ought to be equal to the probability of any given individual being aboriginal: ~1.5% As Aboriginal people are still over-represented amongst the poor and under-educated, the probability of an Aboriginal PM is still too low, but to say that there should be an Aboriginal Prime Minister seems as silly as saying that we should have an African PM. Let statistical probability be the only effect of race on politics.

I'm not of the opinion of finding blame, It's more recognition of the traditional land owners, & with every generation & political government not giving the recognition It looks more like stupidity than ignorance. At least 1/3 of the political representation should be reserved for the native vote & this would just be below fair. Give the landlords a turn at running their own property, they couldn't trash It anymore than the previous tenants

Before the aboriginals even got there, there were the pygmy Inhabitants who were literally hunted down genocide style by the Indonesian aboriginals. So it is not even there land it was the pygmies. That being said, every country in the world has swapped owners hundreds of times. The fact that the aboriginals claim they own the land now is not because they do, no they don't own it. It's just a money grab and guilt trip.

the whole "invasion day" thing's a pretty new meme aimed at drawing attention to problems in the aboriginal community.. australia day commemorates the arrival of a few english ships on the east coast that aimed to set up the first colony - not to wage war on the natives.. holiday itself has become more about celebrating the good things about the country as a whole, just like any county's national day..

It may be a big surprise to you 6pusher..ALOT of us have had jobs and been working for years! You wouldnt have any grounds to get compensation or an apology...it happened to yr grandmother. I have an older daughter who is also Polish, and thank our Creator she doesnt have a chip on her shoulders like you!

Sure it was cowardly, horrendous, cruel and disgraceful... But why is that I have to pay for a crime another commited? During the war my grandmother lost her house to Nazi soldiers.. Do I contact the german government and ask for reperations? Because my grandmother suffered mean I deserve something? Talking about my town only, they have literally hundreds of Aboriginal only job agencys, lawyers and health services that I have to pay out the ass for. Yet they remain jobless.

The entire planet falls into that category, with the exception of some of the pacific Islands. You can not have any reasonable expectation that all lands ever taken in all conquests will be returned. You also need to see that often, in North America, the First Nations are in no way enhancing their own quality of life. Many tribes have fallen into the idea of being handed their subsistence, and actively discourage their people from improving their lots.

1. ppl did speak up about gubbakiller's comment. 2. wtf? no compensation has been dished out. The apology is just a symbol (sorry for what; committing acts of genocide?) Wld Holocaust survivors be satisfied with just an apology from the Nazis? 3 hand-outs amount to nothing compared to the value of the wealth that STOLEN. The entire Australian continent! Yr relative cld get work here because she was White; she benefitted from a crime. The least you cld do is acknowledge this and b respectful.

"between tribal conflicts and occupation" No, there isn't. First nations attacked and massacred other tribes all the time. The only difference between them doing it, and the Europeans stepping in was large scale success rates. Also 'subjugation'? Free health care, free post secondary education funding, and they don't pay any taxes ever.....? You sure you're reading that right? Take it personally? Because I live in North America, and am thus by your words, and 'occupier'.

Do all members of all tribes fall into this pattern? No, not by any stretch, but I happen to know enough individuals who abandon their reservations and families because they could see how corrupt the band leadership was, and how intent on maintaining the cycle of poverty they had become. I will not claim there are no social issues facing the first nations, but I will say some of them are of their own making.
