Trane never goes "too far". I follow him everywhere. I know wherever he takes me will be my new home.

Coltrane groups rip mad shit like Allman Brothers "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" (frankly a bad copy of "My Favorite Things," in some ways, generally,) but any Coltrane person telling you it's "spiritual" is usually a moron. I was obsessed with Coltrane for years and have very discerning taste in his music, like a real person who likes things. This is not a great tune. Check out Coltrane solo on Afro-Blue from Live in Japan, arguably his best single solo, David Lynch nightmare/victory.

I don't know what you're even trying to get at, "this rules" vs. "this sucks" is evidence of healthy human fandom, "this is spiritual" is evidence of people pretending to like something they don't even understand, and they generally suck. Pharoah Sanders does some interesting stuff here? Cool, but Coltrane kinda doesn't.

This is the "Trane" that left the station of standard jazz and went to a higher plane of playing and consciousness.......I have not heard much that was "higher" than this and he had his main man Pharoah right there with him on the journey right up until the end

the tour was partialy a promo for the new Yamaha saxophone., trane and pharoh were given new altos---they didnt make a tenor yet, the first solo may be Pharoah- who is unfamiliar with horn and doesnt do his usual screeching -a beautiful lyrical solo. trane comes on strong on Tenor.. They had to display the Yamahas at each concert. resulting- with the rare addition of bass clarinet and flute --in fabulous results

@@ayezay2677You missed the entire point. Albert Ayler stated in reference to Coltrane’s album Meditations, “The father, son, and Holy Ghost”. He (Coltrane) was the father, Pharoah (Pharoah Sanders, RIP brother) was the son, and I (Albert Ayler) was the Holy Ghost.

I was going to write about what a peaceful comentary pool this is and scrolling down there you go with the ignorant guy who probably never listened any classical music asking all of us why do we listen to this crap and i am answering. Crap is the music that most people listen to. Coltrane is probably some of the best and beautiful music there is but you need to have some music education to be able to enjoy it or be naturally wise enough. And by the way beauty as the architets know has to do with proportionality and there are patterns to explain beauty. More than that Coltrane's music is highly evocative, expressive, beautiful etc. Coltrane used to say that he was trying to emulate Albert Ayler who also played beautiful for "so called" free Jazz wich all Jazz is (Barry Harris, my new teacher lately).

Why the hell does the host keep trying to define the categories as racial rather than class struggle? Is he a Democrat? The black participants in this discussion keep rejecting the role of black spokesperson denouncing 'the white man'. Its the host keep trying to make them into identity politics of the Democratic Party, MSNBC, the black professional race hustlers. Jay is right in discussing class politics as class politics and categorising it in class terms.
