The year is 1960, and legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane is close to quitting Miles Davis's band. They are on tour, performing in Paris. This is a live recording of their performance in Paris on March 21st, 1960.
0:14 Miles Davis plays the melody of "Bye Bye Blackbird" on muted trumpet.
1:10 Miles takes an improvised solo on the chord changes.
4:57 Coltrane begins his long improvisation on the chord changes.
7:23 Where you might think Coltrane would end his long solo, he keeps going, his improvisation getting more and more "challenging".
8:20 Coltrane keeps going, and the Paris crowd doesn't know what to make of it.
9:17 The crowd gets restless- you can hear them start to whistle and make noise- what is going on? What is Coltrane doing? And is the crowd cheering or protesting?
9:58 Now the crowd REALLY doesn't know what to make of things. The tension is electric. Coltrane is undaunted in his passionate improvisatory solo which has now gone on for close to 6 minutes.
10:39 Perhaps a consensus has emerged: the crowd bursts into applause before Coltane's solo ends.
11:00 Coltrane's solo ends, and Wynton Kelly begins his piano solo, which is sparkling and as swinging as it gets- but after hearing Coltrane, is the way that we hear Wynton Kelly forever changed?
At the end of the tour, Coltrane quits Miles' band.

You can’t ....damn did you hear this shit? Miles is telling life stories ..... Trane is working on ideas that will later become Platos for future horn players like myself to spend lifetimes trying to assimilate-he ...... WOW! And again Miles is like the older well traveled man of life just layin the knowledge down. This is why I embrace this music! Thanks Pop Thanks Paul Thompson 61 years of this and I’m still amazed.

John Coltrane and 1960 ... two things that CHANGED EVERYTHING ... I was just the one WHO COULD LINK IT ALL TOGETHER ... nothing is lost yet, BUT WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR ATTITUDE and cherish the things we have gained ... without taking it away from others ... And for those who believe in a touch of MAGIC - there's a blackbird in my garden, WHO THINKS HE'S THE REINCARNATION OF THE BEST PERFORMER EVER ... I can listen to him with a smile on my face, and KNOW THAT WE WILL SOON COME TO REASON AGAIN ... VERY SOON ...

The French weren’t ready yet for Coltrane’s challenging style of improvisation. He was already steps ahead and nearly ready to take the quantum jump into a more avant-garde style of playing. I love this ‘in between’ style; searching for freedom in the set boundaries of the theme.

Just heard this yesterday.... Let me start by saying I've always admired Coltrane, even transcribing and then playing on alto and tenor sax his Giant Steps solo. His performance here, though, left me forever changed. Still shocked by its brilliance and depth of perspective, I see the world and my life as being more expansive than I had ever imagined, that everything I've done has been nothing but an exercise in naivete. But with that said, I now have a richer appreciation of the past and how my future should be shaped. In summary, his performance is life altering, as goosebumps don't lie; and this, my friends, is the truth and compelling essence of art--nourishing and liberating the soul!

Miles *hears* every note he plays, is all about the communication with the band and the audience. His beautiful use of the real blues vocabulary, his reinvention of the melody, his unbelievable time draws the band and audience into his ideas. Trane is communicating with someone/thing else entirely and you get to listen in.

The four years Coltrane spent in Davis's group-from 1955 through '59-catapulted the unknown saxophonist from local obscurity to national renown. Under the spotlight that came with playing alongside Davis, Coltrane evolved from what many heard as faltering insecurity to bold, chance-taking confidence. A creative rift had formed between Davis and his enormously talented tenor saxophonist, John Coltrane. One month prior to the show at the Olympia, Coltrane told the bandleader he wanted to leave the quintet to focus on his solo career, but Davis convinced him to stay until the tour ended on April 10, 1960. I, however, in this time and place, am grateful for the opportunity to lift up John Coltrane's music, knowing from personal experience and testimony, and from a great cloud of witnesses, that it is the Spirit of the Lord which is delivered from heaven through John.

For me Coltrane's playing is the answer to his upbringing with his very religious surroundings, his extensive practising his instrument later on, studying scales and harmonies like no one before. Add to that his use of drugs until a point, but everything added together led to him reach a type of nirvana when he played. There's is no God or anything involved only the right mix of circumstances.

As an ex-trumpet player, Miles always gave me confidence. Why? Because he could be technically quite dreadful and was quite capable of occasionally playing the wrong chord! So maybe my own jazz solos were not so bad after all. Yes, I know he was a jazz genius but not because of his continual technical accuracy but sometimes in spite of it.
