Only two of my heroes have ever approached me and started talking. One was John Cooper-Clarke in Edinburgh in 1980 (and again on the London Underground in 1995). The other was Mark E Smith (The Fall) in Birmingham in 1997. Both John and Mark were born in Salford, a place (including neighbouring Prestwich and Broughton where they grew up) that should be proud of producing such friendly and down to Earth (as well as talented) people.

Saw him supporting Be Bop Deluxe at The Manchester Apollo back in 1978. Bag of school note books and a few bottles of Guinness. Johnny strolled on the stage like a dude who had lost his way back stage. The crowd uncertain but he broke into the legendary Beasley Street and they were all of a sudden on board with both his poetry and style of delivery. Shame we lost so many unwritten poems to the drug addled years, but the good news was thanks to his missus Evie and people like Johnny Green he made it through it all and re-launched his career.

I was born in Ashot Under Lyne in 1953. On occasion my mother would take me from Stalybridge to Manchester shopping or the' pictures. A;ong the way we always encountered signs saying 'Oldham.' I wanted to know so badly what was there, but then I was whisked away to Australia as a 10 Pound Pom's riff raff ! Now I may never know the delights of Oldham. But fuckit, I found plenty more in Melbourne, Sydney, Thailand an Singapore. We make do.
