I like them both, both have their place in garden tractor history. Nice machines

I've had Cubs and John Deeres. I still have Cubs. My oldest Cub is 55 years old this year and has been in the family all 55 of those years. Not only has the Kohler never been rebuilt, it still works for a living. I had her out today pulling and pushing logs.

Definitely a keeper! What model is your tractor? Guessing it's a narrow frame if it's from '69.

Currently taking up most of the backyard too lol. I need to re-arrange everything...it's like truck/tractor/trailer Tetris in the yard right now.

Just subscribe, i love the old cub cadets. Just picked up a 1650 with twin stick hydraulic lift. Has the front hydraulic also. Cane with a deck and front plow.

Thanks for the sub! Congrats on the new 1650, the twin stick hydraulics are really handy to have for a front blade. Good luck with your new machine.

Just picked up this Allis chalmers homestader 8. Did you know that they actually classify them as a garden tractor? They are smaller than the box store mowers of today but still garden tractors!

It may have just been a marketing ploy as the definition of "garden tractor" has changed a lot over the years. I probably wouldn't want to hook a garden plow behind it.

@@MichaelTJD60 That's the same thing that I thought. Until I realized they made plows, 3 points, blowers, decks, everything. A 4 lug rear end, it's pretty small but definitely heavy duty. I just find it to be the coolest thing. It's the garden tractor for a urban area. It fits into a small backyard in the city just fine, yet it can plow, and it plows not bad. Mine came with all the attachments luckily, plows, 3 points, stuff like that. So I am fully loaded!

The engine in the cub sounds much healthier than the JD , shame it only has single stage hydraulics and cant run a power angle plow ..for me personally im a Kohler magnum 18 fan . (What’s in my JD 317) its a Bullet proof and sounds better like a deeper tone.. cast iron removable cylinders , just a tougher take more of a beating engine ,but thats just me , my personal preference..
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 ай бұрын
The engine in the 318 has a bad flyball spacer which is causing the surge in RPM, but otherwise it runs pretty good. The Cub Cadet has dual hydraulics like the 318 - their system only had one set of ports up front while the plow/implement lifted from the center rockshaft. Magnum 18 is a good engine like the Onan P218G, although I've only ever had one that wasn't problematic...

Yes, once it comes back from the fab shop with the new 3rd ramp. It needs some TLC before it's video-worthy.

Hey Michael! I’m looking at a local who’s selling a 1989 Cub 1811 Hydro with a blade and I was wondering how much it is worth. It’s only got 811 hours on it and he’s price is fairly cheap. I was wondering if they were any good.

@@ThatMowerMan very good tractors. Pretty much the newer version of my 782 with magneto ignition. It might be a $600-800 tractor with the blade and with lower hours.

I personally dont think you can beat a Cub Cadet shaft driven garden tractor. They have been proven in their design and unchanged until they were discontinued last year. Its a shame for Cub to no longer be making what made them famous. The company will never be the same again.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 ай бұрын
Unfortunately the long-lived shaft-drive Cadets were a victim of their own success - a design that worked so well for 3 decades that it nearly put them out of business (multiple times). They were due for some design changes in the 90's, but MTD's long-term vision aimed to do away with the traditional design that kept them going for so many years... ultimately they sacrificed their quality and reputation as a result.

@@MichaelTJD60 100% shaft drive cubs are hard to kill! Hey what do you think about the steel replacement oil pump gear for Kohler Command V-Twins from Midwest Cub?
@MichaelTJD60

@@JoshAllen17GoatedDon't have any experience with them, but it sounds like something Kohler should have been using a long time ago. Plastic gears in an engine that runs hot by nature (especially in a garden tractor) is never a good idea...

@@MichaelTJD60 I would like to swap one into my CH670. Though its a pretty rare failure if you keep up on maintenance, id still like to try and swap it in. Then the engine would be basically bulletproof. Its unfortunate that most small engines use a nylon gear in some fashion. I have yet to see one without one.

@@JoshAllen17Goated Onan used all steel gears for many years up until late '85 just as the P series were coming out. They just HAD to switch the flyball spacer to plastic to save a couple pennies....

I grew up riding my dads 314. My dad passed last year and now my mom needs to sell it. Needs maintenance and mowing deck reattached. Not sure it runs. Does have grass catcher and snow plow implements. Anyone hazard a guess at the low $$$ number on a tractor like this? $1000 too much? Even though it's old its been kept in a shed and not outside so no rust or anything. I was thinking $500 for the tractor and $500 for the plow/catcher. I have zero clue as to used tractor prices, especially ones this old.

@urbanitesgarage3299 7 ай бұрын
314s are still a good tractor but not as expensive as 318, if you got it to run again , it would be worth the 1000 to someone but in non-running condition 500 for everything. Atleast in my area
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 7 ай бұрын
Sorry for your loss. With the current garden tractor market, you'd be lucky to get anything more than $600-700 for the tractor and deck. Add $350-400 for the snow blade and another $150 for the bagger. 314's are an excellent tractor, the issue is you can usually find a 318/322 etc with more features for not much more money. I'd highly recommend selling the implements separately - they won't be worth as much individually if you sell everything as one package.

Thanks Guys. Appreciate the insight. Losing your dad is one of those tough things in life your dad can’t help you get through. We’re not trying to make money. Just get a reasonable amount while offering someone a nice deal. Sounds like we were at least in the ballpark.

@@MichaelTJD60 Follow up: Just visited my mom last week and got his other tractor running nicely, an x485 which had been sitting for a year. We have good neighbors and my parents have been there for over 40 years. When I go back in Fall my neighbors have offered to help get the 314 running and I'm going to bring it back to CA and make it a show tractor and futz around with it. The motor was rebuilt recently and pretty much just needed a battery. But, they suspect the carburetor could also be replaced. Anyway, I'll ship parts over the summer and we'll get it running and adventure it back to CA spending way more than it's worth but such is life sometimes. With this little bit of work I have a new appreciation for your channel. One of these awesome neighbors has the same x485 as my dad and the others have JD diesel's similar to one you featured on another video.

@@rodneyward8357 Exactly. Just mowed my (wet and overgrown) backyard with the 318 tonight and used the dual brakes to climb the drop-off at the edge of the yard. Turf tires usually sit there and spin...tractor was able to walk right up the slope when I tapped the brakes.
