I know you probably just misspoke, but for watchers, the 3 black levers are not PTO. They are hydraulic levers for remote cylinders, 3 point, or deck lift. There is either 1 or 2 electric switches on the left dash that operate the PTO clutches.

yep I BOUGHT mine at a sawp meet in texas..for $375 one flat..one hydrolic leak cracked flare....but mine is a 400 love it been working on building the front end loader...I'm hoping that the hydrolics will work the new cylinders ..

Just fixed a power steering in a JD425. The pistons are not serviceable. They would cut it and weld it back up. It was cheaper to buy a new power steering piston. All fixed and out the door now.

Heya Bob! Yep....The cylinders are not rebuildable, which is a PIA, but it is what it is. That color always spells $$$ when repairing anything. A little tip/trick when ordering. John Deere has a web sight where you can go to get an on line price, then all you have to do is mention the web sight at your local dealer and they WILL price match the web sight. Cheers! Green is mean. See a lot on the lawns around here (models?) , At one time there was a dull gray Gravley in the neighborhood. Always struck me as a road rat in primer.. That 420 is showroom clean!

Those three levers are not pto. Two arms are the hydraulic lifts for front and rear. The third lever is for the blade angle ports up front. It can also be used for a snowblower shoot.

HI, I just purchased a 1988 420. Runs good and PTO's work flawlessly. Problem I'm having is that both the power steering is intermittent and it drastically slows down uphill almost to the point of not making it up. I may have bitten off more than I can chew. I'm going to flush the trans. fluid and change the filter. Any tips you could give on troubleshooting? I don't want to throw parts at it as they are quite expensive (e.g. hydraulic pump). Thank you for your help. Scott

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the John Deere 400 series to give you sound advice. But I would suggest going to Facebook and joining the many John Deere collector groups and I'm 100% positive there are people there that can help you diagnose your issue and help you out. The Murray came back for one repair and ended up needing a new starter solenoid which I did a really crappy video on (My hands were SO in the way of the shot a lot lol.). Cheers Brother! Sean~

First, I misspoke on the levers, they're the control levers. The "Power Take Off" term I used is very well understood in the farming and garden tractor industry (look it up). Second, it was sold for what the owner wanted. I myself, preach exactly what you said. When someone asks me what something is worth, my standard answer is ALWAYS "What ever someone is willing to pay for it". But I'm never condescending or disrespectful when saying it.

Ahh a real John Deere Garden Tractor, not the green knock off's you find all over the box stores. Couldn't tell you how much it is worth, I'm not a tractor guy LOL. I just know they don't sell for cheap when you find them for sale, they're built to last forever, unlike the stuff that's built today...I think until you get into the Signature Select X-Series machines you aren't really getting much. I looked at I think an X580 last year, wow, I'd love one but ouch the wallet LOL...great machines tons of power, and the only issue I'd see would be they're much larger than my lawn tractor so they're slightly limited in comparison where you can get into with them but the trade off for getting a machine that's going to still be working in 20+ years and you can still get parts for is where you actually save money. Some day I'll have a John Deere though.

My two main tractors cost me more in tires than for the actual price I paid for them and I'd put them up against anything as far as capability and variety of implements any day over JD's or Wheel Horse etc. And, they're 54 and 57 years old! Cheers William! Zip~

If you watched the video, you can see the condition and the options it has. Momma sue won't take less than $3200 for the tractor, deck and snow blade. It may seem high, but it's a collectible and that is the going rate for an all original low ours (761). Momma Sue has a sentimental attachment to it, but that is not dictating the price point. We've had a few John Deere avid collectors value the unit for us. It includes all of the owners manuals and original purchase receipt. So, it's your call. If it's worth it to you, then let me know and I'll let Momma Sue know if you're interested. She's currently in Florida for the Winter and will return in March, but I can take care of the transfer of ownership if you're interested. Cheers! Zip~
