The John Deere 4455 tractor as shown in these old VHS film clips was brought home to my farm in 1990 and worked long and hard with one task or another, no matter how large or small. This video depicts a typical year of use that this tractor would experience many years ago, as well as including all of its "helpers" that also contributed greatly to help make my life on this farm just a little bit easier. To see this same tractor still at work today please refer to • Pushing/Piling snow wi...

The 55 series was one of the best Deere ever offered. Dad bought a new a 4055 for utility work, haying etc as he wanted a more nimble tractor for these chores. Tractor is still in service as a utility tractor, decades later. Love green paint! Great video!

I remember as a kid dad filled up the rear tires with water and we pulled a talorway 22 ft disk

Depending in what part of North America you live in determines whether you can get away with just water for ballast. In this part of the world the tires were filled with a mixture of water and calcium chloride in order to keep them from freezing (and rupturing) during the winter months. The calcium did help add extra weight as a bonus, but was always a chore to work with as it would eat away at any exposed metal that it came in contact with, not to mention it was not the greatest thing to get on your hands either.

Hello, Don. A great collection of farming videos and certainly well looked after equipment. Would enjoy seeing current video of your 4455 working in the yard! On our farm we have some equipment that will hopefully never leave our homestead as well. At 32 years old I farm with a mixture of older and newer equipment, with my folks, in Manitoba. Many of the 50 and 55 series John Deere tractors are still in use in my area. We skipped the soundguard era of John Deere tractors, however. Dad bought a brand new 1998 6400 that we still use daily, with over 22,000 hours. I too am a fan of the green and yellow. Hope to see some more content! J

Firstly, thank you very much for your many varied comments. Secondly, I am greatly impressed you have managed to put 22,000 hours on your 6400, could not imagine that many hours accumulated in such a short time span. And finally, at the moment I have not been able to produce any video showing my 4455 at work here in the yard. Not much snow the past few years, plus the odd job around the yard hardly qualifies for any length of video of any substance, but then again, never say never!!!!

Yes it sure has been a handy tractor and one that we often say owes us nothing due to its reliable and ready performance. Beef farming certainly racks up the hours on machinery! Did you or you parents ever have livestock on the farm? Perhaps a bit personal to ask, is there a next generation to take over the farm at any point. Again, thank you for sharing all your videos!
@DeereDon
@DeereDon 3 ай бұрын
Regarding your inquiry concerning livestock on this farm, yes, both my grandfather as well as my father raised beef cattle as well as running a very small dairy operation. I too kept cattle a number of years, but my heart was not in it, and after about 10 years I decided to sell all the animals and devote myself totally to grain farming. As for continuing the family farm that has been here for 106 years, well, I am afraid that once my wife and I are gone then this farm will come to a close. Such is life.@@jaa7566

Amazing video sir! We purchased a 1989 2555, 4wd, with cab when I was very young. We raised tobacco, corn and soybeans with rye as cover crop. Between the time I was 10 to 17 I bet I put 7000 hours on it myself. My father worked 3rd shift so I did the farming. We used it on 90 acres. I loved that tractor. I restore old JD garden tractors now in my free time. It's an addiction! Thank you for the excellent content.

What an absolutely outstanding presentation. No fluff, no clutter, just enough of everything. My family bought a new 4455 when I was 11. 2wd power shift just like yours. They used it mainly to chisel plow with a mounted chisel plow, disc and pack and blow silage in to the silo. My uncle kept it spotless just like yours. He had towels on the floor, and a California car duster behind the seat. It looked better than new. It’ll forever hold a special place in my heart. I swear it has a glow that surrounded it. I’m a JD man and I see something special about all models from the smallest lawn mower to the biggest 9RX, but as long as I am alive nothing will outshine that 4455. Beautiful farmstead too. Very attractive piece of property. Would like to have something similar myself. Thanks for making my day more enjoyable. Hope this message finds you well and having a favorable day as well.

Hi Don! Just come across your videos. I’ve really enjoyed every video you have put up so far! I farm in Central Alberta, (Three Hills) area. We still run JD 9350 Drills. Ours are hoe type drills but do well in our gumbo type soil. We seed right into stubble with no pre-till needed and does a great job. We pull it with a 1086 international as we couldn’t afford the nice green paint at the time haha. All the best and take care.

Hello Cody: Glad to hear you have taken the time to watch the different You Tube videos I produced, not sure if you watched all of them, but hopefully you have. Unfortunately, like I said in my last production---Straight cutting with a John Deere Maximizer---I had run out of old VHS material. Since I have retired from farming (12 years ago) I no longer have any material to work with and therefore I have ceased production of any more videos. Sorry to tell you that, but I still thank you for your comments. Much appreciated. (Was through your area many years ago, very beautiful country!!)

How many acres where you farming at your largest size?
@DeereDon
@DeereDon 2 жыл бұрын
Hello John-- I was farming approximately 1,150 cultivated acres when my 4455 was the main tractor on my farm, once I got the 8450 I increased my land base to approximately 1,500 cultivated acres, give or take. Some of this land was owned, the rest rented from family or friends.

Great video again. You and I and many others like us share a love of farming that few others will ever understand. I noticed no markers on either of your 9350 drills. Was that common practice in your area?
@DeereDon
@DeereDon 3 жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge I do not know of anybody in this surrounding district that ever used markers on their drills. At one time there was a lot of acres seeded each year with both press drills as well as end wheel drills, but for some reason that concept was never considered. As for myself, because I used both hydraulic outlets on my tractor to work the press drill cylinders I had no way of utilizing marker lifters. Therefore that idea had to be shelved and I just went with "eye-balling" my way down the field with probably a 6 inch overlap.

I had turned 58 that year, I had accomplished what I had set out to do, and that was seed 40 crops. Being a small farmer doesn't help either, it got to the point where I realized I was just banging my head against a brick wall.

@DeereDon
@DeereDon 3 жыл бұрын
I have driven an 8100 and an 8300, both were good tractors, but I tend to shy away from "comparing" one John Deere to another, simply because every tractor I have used has features that a different one does not have, regardless of horsepower. Having said that, I was actually dealing on an 8000 series tractor but decided to acquire an 8450 4WD instead.

@DeereDon
@DeereDon 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles, in regards to acres. In 1990 when I purchased this 4455 I was farming about 1,050 cultivated acres, give or take, with an absolute maximum seeded acres consisting of 700 acres. It never got any higher then that for a number of years as it was difficult to find anything that could do a proper job in applying enough fertilizer into the ground when it came to seeding stubble. Therefore I still made summer-fallow to some degree. Certainly appreciate your comments.

Why did you take the duals off the 4455 john deere
@DeereDon
@DeereDon 3 жыл бұрын
When I bought an 8450 in the spring of 1997 the 4455 became delegated as a "chore" tractor. By 1999 it was equipped with the 725 F.E.L., but the problem with that was that the wide dual wheels would not allow me to do a decent job in snow or dirt, or whatever. The decision was made to install the wide metric tires and they were spaced exactly to the same width of the bucket. Since the tractor was no longer used for "heavy" pulling I felt the duals were no longer necessary. If you read my comments at the "top" of this page you can follow the website that is listed there and see my tractor as used today.

@@agustin3458 It is indeed a pleasure to find someone from your part of the world that enjoys watching my video. In regards to your question concerning horsepower, my 4455 is rated at 140 P.T.O. horsepower. The tractor may have more horsepower then that (or even possibly less) but that is its ADVERTISED HORSEPOWER RATING. I never did get it tested on a dynamometer, simply because I was satisfied with what it was capable of doing, and therefore used it as such right to the present day. I am curious as to what you use your tractor for in your country, and by the same token, whereabouts in Argentina do you live? (What would be your closest large city?)

@@DeereDon thank you for making this video so emotional ... my father bought the 4455 in 1993 and since then I have never disappointed. We use it to grow soybeans, corn, sorghum, and sometimes wheat. We hooked up a 20-ton monotropper at harvest, we also use it for subsoiler work, disc harrow, cultivator, soil work, a bit of everything. I live 1100km from the capital of the country which is Buenos Aires, I am in the interior of a province called Cordoba. The ugly thing about this country is that they kill the agricultural producer, punishing him with a lot of taxes, the government is against work and it is getting more and more difficult, but we have to continue ...
