Hey man you seem to have some knowledge on the gator I did the water pump got it timed and running fine no leaks full of coolant but its overheating now would you have any idea why?? It's never overheated and it's got over 7k on it now

Getting ready to tackle all of this on my 2012 Gator 825i (original owner). I know this engine is made by CHERY. I'm not having any issues with mine other than being on its 4th starter, but this machine being 10 years old (has about 1000 hours on it) I figured with time it's probably due anyway. Planning on doing water pump and thermostat while I'm in there. Are these interference engines? (if the timing belt breaks, does it bend the valves...or just leave you stranded and you reset the time with a new belt and its good to go?)

Non interface engine. Most of my problems was the belt tensioner. Thermostat is easy. Water pump was a little time consuming if I remember correctly

@@chrisward405 good to know. Thank you. I'm going to start collecting parts for it. Also I can't get a (OEM) starter to last more than a a year or two, but that's a complete separate issue. Two were replaced under warranty. Seems to be a pretty common issue on these machines.

Chris I am replacing the water pump and saw the timing move as the tensioner was released ,You say that the timing marks just need to line up.Is that assuming at top dead center on a certian cylinder or just line them up and all will be fine,Mine only moved a couple teeth but who knows which way.also why the tensioner change so many times.Is there a failure in them I need to look for??Thank you for your time!

Just line the marks and you are good. The problem with the tensioner is water gets to the bearing and it breaks.

Terri Breneman I always kept a spare pulley with me on the trail. You can swap it out on the trail in about 30 minutes.

@@chrisward405 Thank you so much for the info,I own a small engine shop and generally have a rule about UTV"s and ATV"s ,I dont work on them as I have my hands full with mowers,Trimmers and chainsaws.I only took this repair because its an old farmer friend and customer who sends me a lot of business.I thought I would just look it up quick on you tube and there wasnt much info.Our local John Deere dealer doesnt even want to service them and when I picked up the new water pump wished me good luck and said I wouldnt want to work on it again.I replaced the starter on it 2 weeks ago and that is sure a pain.Again Thank you for your help and I am subscribed to your channel as of right now!!

How on Earth do I get the cam timing gear off and the cast cover that is glued on in between so I can get cam shafts out.

There are a couple bolts on that cover that have to be removed. You will have to remove the valve cover of course. As far as the gear goes you will have to use a gear puller. Hope this helps.

Great video! I got mine apart and found the tensioner in pieces. So the marks are off. How do I turn the cam and crank to get them lined up? Just by hand?

@@jonathanmacnevin8449 no. I never had that issue. Only problems I've had were the primary clutch needed cleaned frequently (hard to go in gear and out of gear) and the timing belt tensioner pulley going bad

Question, I was driving my 821 i - 2010 Gator through snow today, all of a sudden the gator stopped, engine was running fine, is it the drive belt? Gear box? Something else, My machine will not go into forward or reverse. What should I check first? Can someone help me please? Thank you

The drive belt could have gotten wet as the belt air intake is close to the ground where your feet are. Can you shift the lever forward and reverse?

What is the spec for the tensioner? In other words how tight should the belt be?

I can't remember. It's been a couple years since I made the video. You can check with your local dealer and they will give you the info

Using your hand the deflection of the belt should be 5 mm (at a referenced force pressure of 20~30N).Torque for tensioner bolt is 25+/-3 N.m

@@chrisward405 Thanks for responding. I was working on one that overheated and warped the head. I managed to get what I needed from John Deere. They were nice enough to actually print out the steps for disassembling and reassembling the head along with all the torque specs. Thanks again!

At the time I had to go to the JD dealer. Wasn't bad on price. You could probably get most parts off ebay now

Not sure if they have a rebuild kit per say. I just went to John Deere dealer and ordered everything. It was surprisingly cheeper than expected

If the tensioner goes bad it will put the engine out of time and the engine won't run
