The JD 860 Scraper is a short promotional film from John Deere, touting the features of the “money-saving” JD 860 Scraper, which John Deere released in 1969. The film (from 1969 or the early 1970s) features over 15 minutes of footage of the JD 860 Scraper at work. The film opens with a pristine JD 860 (00:44) before cutting to the JD 860 in action (01:15). The elevating scrapper with its 215-net flywheel horsepower diesel engine has a 37,500-cubic foot capacity, maximizing time on the job. The film reviews a number of features designed to contribute to the scraper’s performance and high output. The controls (02:20), gauges, and fuses are placed for ease of access. The bottom panel drops down to form a step (03:08), while the top panel opens upward to reveal part of the engine and the dip stick. The all-hydraulic elevated scrapper is designed to move material at a lower cost than other scrapers. It is self-loading, so no pusher is needed. It can make tight turns with its articulated steering and is equipped with position-responsive steering with hydraulic follow-up. Every major component of the JD 860 is tested under simulated working conditions at the John Deere research facility (06:14). Indoor tests include testing draft and engine frame (06:35) and steering components. More tests are conducted in the field (06:59), including rolling the JD 860 over an embankment to test cab strength. Prototypes are then put to work (07:21) loading, hauling, and dumping earth. The scrappers are run through extensive timing and weighing tests to ensure they are as efficient as possible. There is a shot of a semi-truck hauling a JD 860 (08:48) on a major highway. The JD 860 is great for a variety of jobs, including trench-type sanitary landfill work (08:56) and major highway construction (09:13). The JD 860 is also designed with the comfort of the operator in mind, as the seat is foam-padded, suspended on cushion of air, and positioned so the operator can easily watch the cutting while operating the controls. Hydraulic breaks allow various breaking power. With its high-scraping speeds, the JD 860 is perfect for county road projects. At the future home of the Richmond Hill Little League Ball Park in Geneseo, IL (12:36), the JD 860’s cutting edge and elevator system are on display. The film shows how the JD 860 pulverizes the ground with elevator lips. John Deere dealerships having locally trained servicemen (14:10) who can bring replacement parts quickly, adding to the overall value of operating a JD 860. The film concludes with more shots of the JD 860 at work and recaps the key features of the machine, its testing, and its profit potential for possible buyers.

God, I have own so many of those screaming 860, 860a Jimmy's... Detroit 6-71 straight-six, rebuild every 2-3 years. I sold one once to my buddy, he said it leaked so much oil everywhere it was even coming out the headlights.

860 was pretty good, but the 762 and 862 were better because of a few key changes, like converter lockup, and shifting a bit more weight onto the powered axle.
