Just subscribed. There is no other sound than that of a two cylinder Deere especially pulling a load. I'm 65 and grew up with an R and a 50. The 50 still runs and is I'm the family. Thanks for the living vicariously!

Thanks for the sub! The sound of a two cylinder Deere is iconic! I've never driven a 50. We have had a few B's over the years. And my Uncle runs a 60 on his farm. But the 50 is one tractor I need to find!

I trailer around a 1963 Massey Ferguson MF35 Utility Govt edition. It weights around 3500 pounds. The trailer I use is older and is a 14k, 16ft trailer weighing in at 4K. I tow with my 2016 F150 with a 5.0 V8. I have also towed a 1941 JD model A weighing in at 4600 pounds. I always keep the middle of the back tire on either tractor centered between the dual wheels of the trailer. That was it keep a good load on the truck, while allowing the trailer to handle the majority of the load weight. I also use a set of Timbren SES springs. The spring are made of a rubber plastic material, that get denser the more weight that is added. They do make the backseat of the truck ride rougher. But I don’t get any trailer sag when I tow the MF35, and only a little sag when towing the Model A.

This trailer is I think 18' plus an additional 2' for the dovetail. Tandem 7k lb axles. This AR probably weighs about 5k - 6k lbs. My Ram 1500 has plenty of power with the 5.7 hemi. It's just the suspension that is a little light. So I'll have to look into some helper springs like you mentioned. I think my next truck will be a 3/4 ton. If I could afford it, I'd love to pick up one of the newer Ram Power Wagons. But they are $$$, so I will probably settle for something more affordable.

The AR did a great job! Looked like track was pretty loose.
@jonelsonster

Yes, it was dry and sandy. Not the best conditions for pulling. But at least everyone had the same loose track to deal with.

The AR is a fun model to drive, I have a 1953 AR. The ride is unique as you sit on the tail end yet still have good visibility. Certainly easy to load on most any trailer being so narrow. Thanks for the video.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 5 ай бұрын
Yup! Very good visibility is right! Does your AR have very stiff steering? Ours is ridiculously hard to steer. We need to open up the little steering gear box and loosen it up.

@@jonelsonster yes mine also steers very hard (probably caused by me) having had it all apart for painting.

I have a ‘49 AR it’s not too far into the styled models, it’s a fun little tractor to plow with, never thought about taking it to a pull so I might have to change things up and take that next time. Another thing I like about it as I can let my kids drive it around and I don’t have to worry about them falling off, they’re pretty protected sitting down in between those fenders.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 5 ай бұрын
That's very true! Wheatland it standard style tractors do a good job of isolating the driver/rider from fall/entanglement hazards.

Hauled a 630 with fluid in the tires with an F15. tractor weighed 7,600. The road was wet and my dad had the tractor loaded a little too far to the back of the trailer. I had fairly used tires on. Spun the truck tires at every intersection. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t scared driving that load. On the way home we made sure it was loaded more on the tongue. Much more balanced and felt safer, no truck tire spin. I have since put timbren springs on the truck to help with the weight. I try to get the rear axle of the tractor in between the axles of the trailer. A friend of mine hooks his rear chain up and then drives forward until it’s tight so he’s loaded at the same spot every time. But he doesn’t put a chain binder on the back . I’m not really fond of that idea but I like having a set mark for where it should sit on the trailer. So I agree with you. Little more tongue weight won’t hurt.

I'd rather have a little muck on the tongue than too little. When I was pulling a dump trailer with the old RD Mack on steep gravel I'd slide the 5th wheel forward 3 inches to get more on the drives and back for highway but the RD was sprung with walking beams and stiff as a wagon and would kick easy, 44 rears and 38 front. The old popper did a FINE job and bet the folks had a time! Blessings, yall!

If you want to work an 2 cylinder get an old belt driven fan. We have one at the tractor club I'm a member at. We call it the engine break in fan because it will bog down any 2 cylinder. I run my 35 A on it twice a year.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 5 ай бұрын
That's would be cool to see. Sounds very similar to a PTO Dyno. In that case the working fluid is the oil you're pumping. In this case it's the air. Both do a good job of taxing the machine. One thing I like about the fan idea is that it's direct drive to the crankshaft.

I worked on it a few weeks ago. That video will be dropping in the next few weeks. I need to finish editing the footage. It still has issues... carburetor issues. And I'm hoping once I get that figured out then it will run more smoothly. We needed shop space so we had to move the 70 back out to the shed.

Sounds great (especially when it has fuel 😂). These are very unique to me they have the sturdy look like an R. What was the purpose of these when they were built?? Orchard?? Or was the "R" indicating "regular". I certainly see these being sold in prairie lands.
@brianrvd
@brianrvd 5 ай бұрын
The "R" in "AR" is for regular tread, later called standard tread. It was for wheatland areas. They made this same tractor as an "AO" for orchards. It didn't have the stacks above the hood, and the lights were under the grille instead of on top of the fenders. Full orchard sheet metal was available too.
@jonelsonster
@jonelsonster 5 ай бұрын
The response from @brianrvd is spot on. But I do like how the AR has a grill and nosecone very similar to an R. Because of that I like to think of our AR as a baby R... When in reality it has very little in common with it's diesel powered big brother.
