It's the magic of editing, LOL! Trying to keep the channel rated G. It can be difficult given most of 3 decades in the Army which is most definitely not rated G. I did learn a few things and tried to pass it along to people who are doing the job for the first time.

The Amazon starter seems to be cheaper than a local purchase and the lead time seems to have dropped but who knows with the supply chain issues we're having.

Where did the piece that broke off go? That could cause a lot of problems later. I had a GM product that lost a torque converter balance weight come off, got hung up in the starter gear.

That's a good question. I didn't find fragments in the drive housing. I didn't remove parts to get into the flywheel but saw no evidence of it engaging the teeth. The engine is sealed so no worries there. The Gator has been working fine since the starter change so it seems to have suffered no ill effects. Thanks for watching!

how do you get a starter bolt out when you drop it in the plastic holr

Sorry for the slow reply. KZbin flagged your comment as spam and hid it. If it went behind the drive pulley, that will be tough. You may have to loosen/remove the inside cover. I would try a combination of bent wire, like a coat hanger, and a magnet. Try magnetizing the wire to see if it will pull it out or just hook with the wire and use a magnet to work it out. Good luck! These things are a PITA to work on, like most modern equipment.

It seems JD has not fixed this defect in 10 yrs. My 2021, 38 hrs, 240 mi, has the start-up whine now. Not looking forward to the archimedes experience.

It's not fun but if you follow the tips in the video it should be a little less painful. I agree that it seems the engineers have not addressed what is a chronic problem with these engines. I think the nose of the starter is not designed to support the bendix shaft well enough and as it engages the flywheel it puts a side load on it.

Thanks but I sincerely wished I had looked a little further than this video before replacing the starter on my 855D. On that model, there is no need to remove the cover from the reeves drive and of course there is no cooling system cross over to worry about. Still a ridiculously tight installation but the bolts for the starter can be reached without removing that large plastic cover. Instead, on my model, the skid pans underneath can be removed to get access to the starter bolts. Fully agree, JD did a very poor job of designing the bed hinge and access in general. There should be a means to lift the bed to a 90 degree angle so normal humans with shoulders wider than a teenage ballerina can access the area. It wouldn't be hard to modify the bed hinge with two pivot points instead of one to allow the bed to tilt to 90 degrees. Most irritating however is the cost of a new starter. In my case, the only issue was the bendix drive on the front of the starter but of course JD doesn't sell parts to rebuild a starter. $520!!! for a new starter.
