He did a really good job at Pontiac. GTO was made by gaming the GM's internal regulations. Firebird became an icon on it's own, then it went to become the Bandit's car from the films, and was the car that created the term 'Rockford Turn'. And then when DeLorean left, GM gave a new manager a task to 'save them or shut them'. He didn't have to do much, as Glen Larson specifically requested new Firebird to be Knight 2000 car in Knight Rider, which made it world famous and probably as iconic as DeLorean car. Jay Leno also repeatedly stated that Firebird was always better than Camaro.

I had the good fortune of being the first person to go through a box of papers taken from John's Belfast office by a cleanout worker helping to clear the factory. He took the large box home and only brought it out for a 20 year reunion at the factory put on by the DeLorean Owners Association. The press were present and it was decided that I would be the one to open the box and examine the contents live on camera. I actually had a 15 min. advance opportunity to get a preview and gather my thoughts. What struck me was a Telex John sent from New York after exiting the Concord flight following his visit to Lotus Cars in Norwich, UK. It was addressed to Colin Chapman and was an action list of items needing attention regarding the interior fit and finish of the prototype. John's attention to detail showed a loving regard for the car. He wanted it to rise beyond being the sum of it's parts into a seamless artistic expression. A con artist would have ticked that box and moved on: Not John. I now have several DeLorean cars and being an engineer myself have great respect for the man. I also, by chance, spent hours with Georgetto Giugiaro, the future designer of the DeLorean coachwork, at the 1963 Turino Auto Show where he was displaying his first creation, The Iso Grifo A3. He and DeLorean passionately created a car that was truly special and remains so today.

I almost want to say he seems like a great guy that had a lot of tough breaks but just kept pushing through it all. And in the end he didn't come out on top.

I've watched 2 movies about this person. Driven was the best. He had a vision. And yes it's popular because of the BACK TO THE FUTURE movie. Such a sad story really, but I thought he was an amazing person

Last I checked John DeLorean never profited from emeralds gotten by slave mining so there is at least one big difference that makes John cooler. Also John didn't have a twitter where he was constantly melting down.

Near where I used to live in the UK a guy had some vintage cars and he often had his DeLorean on the street to clean it. Walking past one day, I had a chance to look it over. Up close, they really are stunning cars, even today. It's a shame about the performance issues and the generic parts they used, because it certainly stood out from the crowd.

Christian...oh noooo! He acted in enough movies - sorry to burst your bubble, but very few women let alone people care for him enough to pay $20 to see a movie with him. The man can't act! He has the Clooney name but it stops there.

It is quite sad DMC failed. It would have been very interesting to see where they would have gotten from there.

I agree with you totally. However, there was only a limited market for such a specialized vehicle as the DeLorean. Further, we don't know how much longer the UK would buoy it up. The workforce were all taught on the spot and never inspired any confidence. Most DeLoreans had to have quality repaired into them...

Watch the BBC iPlayer programme, it's all explained in there. DeLorean was looking for some quick easy money, and his friend told him about the stupid profit margins on drugs (and how it couldn't be traced back to him).

Greetings from Pakistan. Me and my kids are hooked to your channel that we recently discovered. Great job. Capitalism is so beautiful, so powerful, so competitive and so fair.... just for the big companies. If you try to cross their way they will make sure to put you down.

Some times they will, other times they won't. Recent History is also full of examples of small start ups taking on the big guys, although some times it is big companies taking start ups with them to go against other big co's.

Well that's life. Tesla almost didn't made it. They went almost bankrupt a few times. But they made it and are now the most valuable car company. DeLorean also almost made it. If he managed to stay profitable a bit longer, his company would have reached a safe level.

There's no better system than capitalism at incentivizing people to get up and go do something. It drives innovation and propels us into the future. If you don't like capitalism it's probably because you've been sitting around waiting for someone to hand you a fair share. No society ever benefited from people sitting around waiting for a hand out. You effing idiots and your anti-capitalism propaganda are going to tear down the last bastion of freedom.
