He was a super nice guy. I met him in Atlanta and we spent the day together at the hotel pool. I embarrassed myself by telling him he looked like John Denver but better looking! He started laughing and shook my hand. Long story short he said he’d leave me two tickets to his concert that night and we parted. My husband thought we would end up in nose bleed section but the guide kept moving us down and put us on the stage platform where the families were sitting! Someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Debbie. They were laughing about what I had said to John that day. John held up the concert that night because he heard there was a bad accident outside and wanted to give people a chance to get inside. Big heart. Loved the mountains. By the way, his voice was clear as a bell, no stress. More to the story but I know this is long. Sorry.

John Denver was an Air Force brat, so he did move around a lot growing up. He was exposed to many places and cultures in his formative years. His dad was a pilot, so, he learned to love the sky and everything under it. He had a basic respect and appreciation for what he found around him, even if it wasn't perfect. And he wasn't perfect either, but he sure was fully human and fully alive and a very fine poet and musician. He was a keen but kind observer. I saw him in concert. When the band took a break, he swung his acoustic guitar around himself and showed us what he was really made of. For a full 30-45 minutes, he was pure love and joy. He sang for the love of it.

John Denver became a conservationist after he moved to the mountains. He believed that water and land should not be polluted. As a teen I followed a lot of what he said about the beauty of the Earth. I was just beginning to discover my Native American heritage, and what he said made a lot of sense. I loved his music from the first time I heard it. It made sense.

The lyric He was born again in his 27th year does not mean born again in the religious sense. Coming home to a place he'd never been before. The Rocky Mountains, more specifically Aspen, Co. The entire song is about his love for the Rockies, where he was born again coming home to a place he'd never been before, leaving his old life behind him hanging by a song. The memorial park in Aspen is built by the town after he died is phenomenal.

The album was released in the fall of 1972 and I was gifted it Christmas that year. I wore the album out. I saw him in concert at the end of that decade. Phenomenal! He has his own play list in my music. John Denver loved the Rocky Mountains and built his home in Aspen. He became an ecological ambassador. His music reflected his life, the world he observed, and his values. Although he was categorized as a country musician for a time, he wasn’t one. He started out as a folk musician singer/songwriter and remain connected to those roots. Today his singing would more aptly be categorized as Americana or Roots music.

He saw beautiful Rocky Mountain Ranges, beautiful Lakes, Streams, and Abundant Wildlife and Fauna. He later will make Colorado his home. He wrote this song to honor the beauty that had so captivated him. He lived in Colorado until his untimely death in 1997.

He famously defended these lyrics in a joint session of Congress fighting against mandatory labels for records, as an example of a banned song that didn't mean what the censors thought it meant. He made the case that not all art is understood by the audience, but that shouldn't limit the art itself. Dee Snyder from Twisted Sister spoke as well, and many others.

Thank you for reacting to Rocky Mountain High, John's magnum opus to his beloved Colorado. As you have seen this is a largely autobiographical song featuring references to John's own experiences in Colorado. John grew up a military brat, the son of an airforce pilot, and his childhood was one of regular moves from state to state, even once to Japan, enrolling in school after school, never sticking around for long enough or making friends and resulting in a sense of loneliness that was only brought to an end in his 27th year when he found Aspen, Colorado and the Rockies for the first time. He determimned that he would one day settle there and that he did after he achieved major success in music. Being a fan of John Denver since the early 1970s I was somewhat surprised by that famous reference in Dumb and Dumber. I wasn't at all offended and I believe neither was John. I see the quote as a real compliment to John, and not at all an insult. If you think about it it was the ultimate in joke. The film makers recognised that the public in general would get it, such was the fame of John, his links to Colorado and his beautiful song Rocky Mountain High. The line would never have been included if there had been any suspicion that people wouldn't get it! And man did they get it!

I’ve always been a fan and took it hard when died so suddenly. Beautiful song, tugs the heartstrings every time, easily his most iconic song. But it’s the guitar work that really gets me. There’s a lot more going on than you think at first. (Try to learn to it, you’ll see. 🙄) Find a later version, like the video from the Wildlife Concert and closely watch him play. He was an accomplished player but made it look effortless. While you’re in that concert, look for Flying For Me, and of course, Annie’s Song. Bring Ali… and tissues.

Hi Mr and Mrs Sebs! About your little one and her tantrums: Have you tried ignoring her? Stay near her, stay calm, make sure she's safe, but ignore her and don't show any signs of stress. The first time my daughter threw a fit was in a grocery store. She reached for some marshmallows and I told her no, they weren't very healthy. She started flailing her arms and screaming! I took her out of the cart and gently put her on the floor and went about shopping and humming, not venturing very far from her. Other shoppers looked at me like I was crazy and I ignored them as well. She finally calmed down and wanted a hug. She never had a tantrum again. It worked for me, maybe it will work for you? If you have been feeding her tantrums with attention up to this point, it might take more than one tantrum and the tantrum may last a long time. Be patient, consistent and good luck! Love your channel and your passion!

Agreed, one hour, three hours, ten hours of tolerating a tantrum is better than a lifetime with a spoiled child. The first time my daughter threw a tantrum in the grocery store, I took her out the basket, told the cashier I had an abandoned cart on the candy isle and we left the store. That night we ate pb&j sandwich’s and her father told her pb&j was all we would eat until we learned how to behave in public. She never threw a fit again in public.

He is totally talking about the "high" of being in the mountains, not being stoned. To me, this is an important distinction because the song is from 1972, and many places in the country tried to ban it from radio play and television simply because of the term "high." JD was one of my favorites growing up, and he has the singular distinction of having written two hit songs that have become official songs of different states in the US: Rocky Mountain High in Colorado, and Take Me Home, Country Roads in West Virginia.

mmmm I feel like I read or saw a story somewhere from Annie herself, who confirmed that it (that particular verse) was about friends sitting around a campfire smoking weed. He was probably in general talking about being "high up" in the mountains, the "high" of the feelings of being surrounded by the nature experienced up there, but you can't totally dismiss the weed aspect of that particular verse.

Please do listen to his versions of his songs for The Wildlife Concert in 1995 two years before he died. Completely live singing (he like virtually never missed a note singing live, quite incredible), he said when he was older his voice was much better and I agree. He was also way ahead of everyone else by decades with trying to help the environment - he loved nature. Indeed his ashes were scattered in the rocky mountains near his home in Aspen so he will forever be at one with the nature he loved.

I went to the Beartooth Mountains in the Wind River Range of the Rocky Mountains (Wyoming) twice. Once as a young teen Girl Scout, once as a mid-teen with a Forestry Service project to replace/repair CCC bridges and trails. I did not partake in drugs of any sort either time, yet this song made me cry for the experiences I'd had. A Rocky Mountain "high" can certainly be had without drugs; to be up in the mountains, far away from civilization, makes you realize the wonderous reality of Nature. Later in life, I did partake in drugs, but I still feel that those experiences were equal to any drug-induced feelings, and that is the message I choose to take from this song.

I think it's mainly "high=ecstatic", but the last chorus has a deliberate double meaning. John Denver was incredibly popular in the early 70s - so popular that there was an inevitable backlash. But his songs live on with stunning beauty. He was as well-known for his TV show as his voice, a variety show which showed off the goofy, country-hippie side of his personality and introduced the world to several new acts. He left us too soon - RIP John. "Annie's Song", "Calypso", and "Some Days are Diamonds" are three more classics of his.

John Denver always felt like an older hippie to me, and I think he perpetuated that image. Personally, I assumed he was high, but I have always thought this song was much more. This was a love song to a place he never knew existed but always wanted. He found that in the nature of the mountains. It was a defining moment in his life. Yes, were they physically 'high' around that campfire? Haha, of course. You must listen to Annie 's Song. It should be dedicated to your wife from You. Then ' Sunshine On My Shoulders '. You could also check out 'Calypso' Google this first to see what was the inspiration for this song.

John speaks of this in an interview. They were in the Williams lake area in august of 1972 during the annual meteor shower. Normal stuff until, late in the evening, one came very low and went smoking across the sky. This all occurred during a phase where the moon was not visible. Later, needing to go relieve himself, John walked off into the trees, where he realized that it was actually slightly darker in the trees. As his eyes adjusted he began to see that there were faint shadows from nothing but the starlight! (Seen it myself many times). As to “Rocky Mountain high “, he addresses this also. It was a feeling he got hiking in the high country, when you got to some place that was absolutely magnificent, some place you had to work at to get there, to see this beautiful scenery, and it gave him a feeling almost like a high.

This is my favorite John Denver song of all time. I grew up in the Rocky mountains and much of this visualization. I can still see in my head like it was yesterday.

Love this song! When I was a child in the early 70s, an aunt moved to Denver and we went to visit several times. This song was my first 'favorite tune.' Still love it 50 years later.

John Denver was my mom's favorite. We had multiple 8-tracks of his in the car when I was growing up. I hope you get a chance to hear The Box one day, that song and its message has been stuck in my head since I was 5 years old.

Grew up in Montana. Went into the Navy, and then lived in California for 12 years after being discharged. I would get soooooo homesick for the Rockies listening to this song. We moved to Colorado from California. I remember driving through the Rockies, listening to this song with an occasional tear because I finally felt like I was home. That line, born in the summer of his 27th year, coming home to a place he's never been before. That was me at 37. Colorado was different from Montana, but the Rockies were still home. This song still hits me in the "feels".

Definitely one of my all-time favorite songs by John Denver. You might try "Poems, Prays and Promises". Not many people react to this one but I don't know why. It really is a beautiful song about his life.

My mom met him at one of the space launches. He hung out with my mom and her friend, took pics, etc. She said he was super nice and very down to earth. Big moment for her, she had loved him and his music for years.

In the line "everybody's high", he's referring to the elation you feel when in the rocky mountains. They were high on life. He doesn't mean high as in, drugged up. Remember, high used to just mean happy.

You gotta do Annie's Song next! I also really like The Eagle and the Hawk except that it's way too short. He always kills the vocals on that when whenever he performed it live. There are other good John Denver songs too.

I saw John Denver at New Mexico State University in December of 1971. He performed in an upstairs ballroom in Corbett Center. I don’t recall if there were any chairs in there or not….. I don’t believe there were …. But everyone ended up sitting cross legged on the floor as close to the little stage as we could get. It was the most intimate performance I’ve ever been to. He spent some time in Roswell, New Mexico when he was growing up so he was acting like we were home folks, talking to the audience and cutting up. In addition to The Allman Brothers Band and Linda Rondstat it was top three of the best concerts my Freshman year.

I have to laugh when I hear this song! I was a young teen when this song came out. My mom heard this song, and was convinced that it was a song about getting high! We had to go over the lyrics with mom to prove it wasn’t.😂 After that, she loved it! Miss mom every day.

One of the people singing backing vocals there is Mama Cass Elliot, she was a close friend of John's and they did a duet on Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special of Leaving on a Jet Plane, it's honestly my favorite version of the song. Sadly, Mama Cass is one of those that was gone far too soon.

At 18 I moved from the farmland of Indiana to Anchorage Alaska and thats where my heart has remained even though i moved back home. I miss it deeply everyday.😢 It was like being reborn again also because i almost died during childbirth. But the serene beauty of nature there was better than any high from a drug. He describes this feeling so well in this song❤❤one of my favorites of his.

Rocky Mountain High was inspired by John's visits every year to see the Perseid and Leonid Meteor Showers. Please see the woman's comment below about the friend he lost. I did not know that story before. He actually moved to Colorado. I see many reactors lauding the virtues of headphones.

John Denver drew inspiration not only from People he new but from the places in nature the places and the things that happen in those places. I lived in Utah in Roy. Looking up at the mountains or looking down on the valley's gave me the high that I believe he was referring to the sense of joy and wander and splendor of the place and now I can look at almost anyplace and see the beauty even beneath the ugliness.

My JD recommendation is "The Eagle and the Hawk" although really anything that he recorded would be fine. Back in my high school days I worked odd jobs so that I could buy his albums as they came out. For a while after he died it was painful listening to them, thinking of all the music he still could have given us if he had lived.
