Octavia, it is, isn't it. Such an ingenious use of Donne's sonnet. Donne, im sure, would've loved it. "now I am become death, destroyer of worlds" Oppenheimer .Thank you for the name of the unknown artist and the painting's location. Obviously someone of the Ruben's school. The fleshyness and abandon. Ruben's painted the ceiling of banqueting house in Whitehall (formerly the Palace of Whitehall, where poor old Charles the first was beheaded. Dostoyevsky makes much of this execution in The Idiot. How Charles dropped his cane on the scaffolding, and nobody picked it up for him. The eternal pause ) on the theme of james' the first's accession to the throne of England and his Union of Scotland and England. Its not bad. Love painting as much as literature. And, they make fine bedfellows. Don't know whether you are interested in Shakespeare's sonnets. But would love to see a broadcast by you on one of them. Would certainly like to hear you read some of them. You'd do a splendid job. Noel

I'm really drawn to the darkness of the portrait of Donne. And the slight hint of disdain that seems to be playing about his lips.

Many thanks Noel. Shakespeare's sonnets are definitely on my list of texts that I'd love to do a reading of. I'm trying to decide which one...

Thank you, Octavia. Lovely. Surely the painting's a reubens. Please see "batter my heart, three personed god in one" from the opera "Dr. Atomic by John Adams. Donne's famous sonnet set to song. It's glorious.

Thank you Noel. The painting of Donne is in the National Portrait Gallery, attributed to "Unknown English artist" (c.1595). Stunning piece of music! Rousing. Thanks for the recommendation.

@@DrOctaviaCox comedy of errors. I didn't mean the Donne painting. But the other one. The woman pulling a god out of the sky.
