exactly.. all four of them were exceptional musicians and they fed off each other. Pete's song writing was also outstanding it has to be said, his ability to tell a story through a song has always amazed me. Quadrophenia 1973 album was the best musical story I've ever heard. When has a band created a vinyl opera like this since ?

As a bass player who always listened to funk and fusion, yes Jaco, Berlin etc I have never quite got the adoration that Entwistle produces. But after watching him play on many vids he is a unique voice. He is uncopyable as was his wish. His unique right hand technique and his take on the minor pentatonic are well inspired unpredictable. For me Geddy Lee was my hero, more melodic and precise. But the Who are a totally different band. May the memory of the ox live on.

James Jamerson was the FIRST electric bass player to be really melodic. John acknowledged he followed his road ( along with McCartney, Jack Casady and John Paul Jones to name a few others ). However John Entwistle's bass playing is totally unique, and was adapted from The Who's musical strengths and weaknesses. I continue to love his playing and his music which can never be copied faithfully. Jaco Pastorius can never be compared to anyone else either. IMHO the biggest bass meteor to hit earth !

The only guy I know who could make "over-playing" sound perfect, and hence it was NOT over-playing at all. If I tried to do that, it would SUCK. RIP, Entwistle. What a bass player, and what a classic guy. Played a school near us with the Abbey Road Show back in the 90s (I think). Security guard caught him smoking back stage and told him he couldn't do that in a school. John's reply was rock and roll at it's best: "Fuck off." :-)

LOL - so the Ox could talk! Besides Entwistle in the Who, I can't think of one other player in any other band in which the bass played such a dominate and dynamic role! Pete so often switched roles so that the guitar anchored a song while John just did these amazing runs and riffs with what was essentially "lead bass." But when you combine John AND Keith Moon, probably the most wildly inventive, manic drummer of all time, I think you have the greatest rock rhythm section EVER to take a stage!

@indyandsam Hes not overated "for his time period" when there wasnt anyone doing any of that stuff. He sparked off a great generation of bass players to "step forward" and rumble. His technique at the time was awe inspiring for the standards of those days. Yes there are better bass technicians but john was a "ground breaker" he did it first when no one else could think of it or have the nerve to step forward and go for it. And he was successful with it! He is to bass what Jimi was to SRV.

We opened for John Entwistle and the band at the Sound Cafe in Norwalk, CT before he passed away. It was a huge treat to be able to play his Buzzard Basses before the gig and he even let me use his rig for the gig. He used "Acoustic Sound Systems." How rock is that to play cabinets that say "ASS" on them!
@at90percent16 жыл бұрын
though most of his stuff is on the guitar he does incredible bass work A confusing statement at best. The bass is in fact a guitar. I haven't seen a lot of lead or rythmn guitar work from John Entwistle. His whole career with The Who he played bass. This is a clip of his own band. He is playing bass. So most of what stuff was played on the non-bass guitar?
@EuchridEucrow116 жыл бұрын
WAS a good singer. By the end he couldn't sing for shit. His voice was shot to hell. All he could manage was that low, 'Summertime Blues,' half-growl/half-moan. It's a shame considering the heavenly falsettos he was capable of as a young man. I guess 35 years of unabated tobacco use can take a toll.

hmm...Geddy Lee is extremely good...but Entwistle is better in many ways...just listen carefully to the bass in this song...or watch any of the newer 5:15 shows; Entwistle generally does like 6 minute bass solos...and they fit perfectly with the song except they're still really crazy...but Geddy Lee bass fills or solos often are off-sounding

This is the guy who made me pick up a bass......back in the 60's you never heard the bass. Fuck.... who wanted to play the bass? The Ox comes along, even with Jimi, Jimmy, Carlos, Blackmore playing, all I could hear was that slammin' bass that no player of skinny strings could muffle or push to the backround. Yeah, John's the reason I picked up a bass and at times the reason why I would like to take all 19 of them out to the back yard for a bonfire...Ox rules.
@DUSTYBASS11 жыл бұрын
I agree with you....I couldn't tell you how many times some egotistical guitarist has told me "we can't all play over the top"...to which I would respond with a "then fuckin' sit back, won't you?". There are ass clowns that still believe the bass should be a backround instrument. Or if you can be heard, they will turn up just a bit louder... even after a perfect sound check. So blessed to be in a 3 piece band where I've always been told to turn up..WE ALL PLAY OVER THE TOP.

What a lame audience! I guess this wasn't ironic or trendy enough for them. If you think he's overplaying here, aren't you missing the point? He was a lead bassist and made no apologies. A pioneer in more than one way, as well, he was, with gear *and* technique, and I think were it not for him that the bass would be a drastically different instrument in rock. A pity that so many guys out there refuse to do more than lazily strum 8th notes in the background with their bass around their knees.

@JungKiChris: Yet another "John Entwistle, Nice Guy" story. By all accounts he was as steady as he appeared -- interest in cocaine notwithstanding. Years ago I read a story about a fan who actually visited JE at his home. John gave him a tour during which the fan accidentally knocked over and damaged one of the rare guitars in John's collection. JE's response? "Uh-oh. Looks like we need to make a trip to the guitar doctor." No anger, no blame. Just . . . take care of it. Cool dude.

@StanleyWiddos LOL, the point of a capo is to change the key and keep certain dynamics... for example, an "open G major" vs a "Barre chord G major"... same basic notes but a whole different feel. Like drop-D or any open chord... it changes the tonality. Yea, I see capos as cheating in some cases... or maybe cheapshits who don't want to get a second guitar tuned to that key... Anyway, Capo's have use otherwise they wouldn't have been around this long. Oh yea, Townsend used a capo on the orig.

@PFloyd87 Hey Floyd, I saw one for sale on E-bay last year. It had a set neck. I believe it was going for $6,500.00 American. J.D. from BLS has one, sadly he treats that bass like it was a $200.00 Fender copy. I guess when you have mad cash, you do as you like. I own 10 basses and they have their own room in my house. My Ex-Wife used to ask me why you need more than one......I guess that's one of the biggest reasons she's my Ex.

Flea doesn't have a shit on Jack Bruce or Geezer. 1. Entwistle, and will always be, he can't be challanged 2. Jack Bruce, Love his bass lines in Cream, very groovy, still not even close to Enwistle, but still one of my favorites. 3. Geezer Butler / Roger Glover. Both brilliant and quite underrated bassists, From Sabbath & Purple. Groovy, and do play more than you think in the songs. Especially Geezer. This is not really based on skill or so, i just find these guys very groovy and awesome.

Four fingers. The pinky is just for show. You must be a youngster if you've never heard of John Entwhistle of The Who, the greatest bass player in rock history. Grab yourself a few CDs (the older the better because the remixes are crap). The Real Me is from Quadrophenia where John & drummer Keith Moon, arguably, the two best at their instruments, are placed in the foreground (like in the live concerts) and do their best work.
@bondurango16 жыл бұрын
Entwhistle used to say his pinky was just for show. That means he played with 4 fingers. Watch, and you'll see that he plucks upper and lower strings together with his thumb and fourth finger. He loves to quadruple the notes with the other two fingers. He's not a funk slapper, but prefers to "drum" the strings, instead; ala his bandmate, drummer Keith Moon of The Who. He's got a master class video and there's a documentary, recently shown on Comcast, where he demonstrates his method.

This bass snob acknowledges Jaco and Stanley but its Geddy Lee for me and Entwistle was one of his role models. Saw the Who, John really did make bass what it is today in more ways than most are aware..By the way, how about his band? Saw them on tv saying kind things but never heard them. I think I actually prefer their version of Real Me. Man they rock! What a singer! Love it!

Yup they are damn expenisive! One for sale here in the UK for £6000 i'm fairly sure all the basses were one piece but i'm not 100% sure, The Status was the True Buzzard IMHO and in Johns opinion i believe may his memory live on! (Note: I'm trying to save up for one of his signature pre-amps! there are two for sale where i live, Crazy coincidence!)

Not trying to cause a feud, Wentz sucks Entwitsle is Amazing that is soo true! But loads of people strum bass, i always strum bass (this is while playing finger style not with a pick?) Don't forget "STOP POPPING PILLS", "NO". Remember Roger walked out of a concert because the rest of them were high out of their minds? There was a lot of turmoil in that group. Somehow they made amazing music though. I guess its Moon's insanity, and Entwistle's "awesomeness" being perfectly complimented by Townshend's genius. Roger was just a singer, at least until Tommy.
