George. He went by "Blind Joe Death " back in 60' his approach is quite simple using several alternative tunings . Open G is easy to improvise a bluesy tune alternating bass with 6& 4,5 strings ..American primitive BS means he makes up his own stuff. Made to 80 great I'm 76 and still picking my Epiphone.

Poor Boy was the first song I learned in open 'D' and thirty years later I'm still in open 'D' and this is the version I learned and the first time I've seen this version on video.

The number of listeners who watched and approved of Part 1 of this concert and not this Part 2 astonishes me. Fahey is like Leo Kottke, a guitar artist who developed and wove his own mastery of the instrument with a unique sound and style.

I'm 63... I finally discovered John almost 20 years ago...I can't believe it took me so long to find him!... Didja know he started the Tacoma label and recorded Willie Nelson's first album(when he had short hair and wore a suit!), And first recorded Leo Kottke also... John was one of my heroes of the guitar playing ilk... A true master . ..many have perfect pitch, but John had perfect tone...

I’ve had the Yellow Princess album since the late 60’s , So. California hippie culture. Got to see him perform at the San Diego State “Backdoor “ , he walked out eating a sandwich, sat down, played his set, then left. I don’t think he said a word. That was about 1969. If I was on my deathbed there is no one I would rather listen to.

Hey Tvlies, would you consider breaking this show up into the individual songs? Or at least the song 'Wine & Roses/Red Pony' ?Of course, somebody already did awhile back, but the video isn't synced perfectly with the audio, as it is with your parts 1-4. This is one of the greatest concert videos that I personally have discovered on this site, and having access to the individual songs would be nice.

I think Fahey is a fabulous guitarist. But his greatest contribution to the musical world was to discover LEO KOTTKE and get Leo's first record contract. Just listen to 6 and 12 string guitar by Kottke (black cover with armadillo), and tell me what you think.

Fahey had that amazing talent where he would find the nerve in a melody and explore that mood the melody gave off. I know Brenda's Blues is kinda "easy" it could be a pop hit kinda.. but I think that piece is a great example

Actually, Brenda's blues really hard to play. Or, maybe, it's hard to learn, but easy when you already can play it. But my fingers just don't want to work, when I try. Last steam engine train more available to play for me.

Not sure if he's great or not. I have vinyl of his I bought 35 years ago. He seems to be beating the pentatonic scale to death with an open tuning (E?). I like him, and he's the legend.

Yes, his approach is fundamentally simple. He paved the way for others, who added, in many cases, an unnecessary amount of ornamentation to guitar playing. What Fahey found was the magic in the hypnotic trance that the guitar could offer. For me, most solo accompaniment guitarists are just showing how great they are, while Fahey goes deeper, constructing soulful, greatly composed pieces. Technically there are better players, but for me Fahey is the best.

I wore out his records out when I started collecting them in the 1970s, also around the same time that I started playing guitar. Days Have Gone By (on Takoma) was a favorite, as was Requia (on Vanguard). There are some brilliant pieces on those albums. But I have to say that today I find Fahey's style to be somewhat monotonous and repetitious. Not to take away from the innovations that he brought to the steel string guitar, but it's not music that I can listen to anymore for extended periods of time. My tastes have changed, I suppose.

He got stuck 50 years ago and never improved. The man never learned to improvise either. Yes the parts of each song are interesting and some beautiful but repeating the same part exactly the same way over and over again becomes rote and boring. Its like he created an accompaniment but never soloed. Its weird that way.
