Field was the "Irish Chopin "he invented the nocturne almost half a century before Chopin .As a professional musician he spent most if his career in Russia .

An even lesser known fact is that he didn't actually invent the nocturne. It was probably invented by Helene de Montgeroult, who published a set of 6 nocturnes in 1807, 5 years before John Field published his first nocturne. Although none of those nocturnes are available anywhere.
