Author and journalist Stephen Kinzer on his book The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War in an interview for Readara.com
John Foster Dulles and Allen Welsh Dulles not only represented the priorities of the Eastern establishment but also the popular anxieties of their times in the 1940s and 1950s. The two Cold War warriors leveraged America’s pervasive paranoia about a communist expansion and the solid grip of U.S. elites on the country’s power structure by exaggerating views of the Soviet power.
The Dulles brothers came to represent the interest of Big Business as the interest of America, viewed the world through the Christian fundamentalism prism and diluted down the nation’s foreign policy to communism versus American capitalism, all this with a fervent belief in American exceptionalism. At that point there was no room for neutral nations in their vision of the world.
In their efforts to project power, the Dulles brothers led the U.S. intervention in Vietnam, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iran, Congo and Egypt with disastrous consequences for these vulnerable nations. While the operations seemed to have succeeded in the short term, they certainly hurt U.S. foreign policy in the long run. Had John Foster Dulles not been involved in the Geneva negotiations in the 50s, the U.S. would have most likely avoided the disastrous war in Vietnam.
Even six decades after the Dulles era, the question of America's role in foreign affairs and how this dominant military and economic power should conduct itself in global politics is still guided by the same narrow interests and prejudices.

Find these and many more answers in our interview with Stephen Kinzer, who explains in detail how the overt and covert sides of American foreign policy became a family affair. John Foster Dulles died in 1959. The airport was completed when JFK was the new president. It was built in Chantilly, Virginia and was going to be named Chantilly Airport. But Eisenhower, Allen Dulles and others put pressure on JFK to name it after John Foster Dulles.

While the assasination was in and of itself regrettable, in many respects, JFK brought it upon himself. The whole notion of the White House as Camelot for the 'beautiful people', having the Secret Service run interference while he banged the wives of Senators, the bumbling and inept foreign (and in many cases, domestic) policy, taking MLK and the Black vote for granted, and provoking Hoover and Johnson at every turn...the man (and his brother) made enemies as fast as he could, and he did so with the sense of entitlement characteristic of the Boston Brahmin (which is to say, insufferably). That's not a nod of approval for the work of the Dulles brothers and their network, but an acknowledgment that JFK was a poor chess player.

@@Stufftowatch21 Wasn't Tippet the officer that was taken out on the street? And his friends called him JFK as his nickname. I think they planned on using him for the body double because JFKs body had too many holes in it for a single gunman. But they ended up using the magic bullet theory.

Yes, there was a relationship between the Dulles brothers (John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles) and Prescott Bush. John Foster Dulles served as the Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959, while his brother Allen Dulles was the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1953 to 1961. Both brothers held influential positions in the United States government during the Cold War era, shaping American foreign policy and intelligence operations. Prescott Bush, on the other hand, was a prominent Republican Senator from Connecticut. He served in the Senate from 1952 to 1963. Prescott Bush was also the father of George H. W. Bush, who later became the 41st President of the United States. While there was no direct familial relationship between the Dulles brothers and Prescott Bush, they were all influential figures within the Republican Party and had significant roles in shaping American politics and foreign policy during the mid-20th century. Additionally, they may have interacted professionally or politically due to their positions of power and influence within the government and the Republican Party.

In so many instances, people in foreign countries understand our national history much better than we do ourselves. When dealing with U.S. citizens, their ignorance should be a first given reality to deal with.
