Deeno and I were driving in L.A. looking for a good spot to produce a new video of me showing and explaining some of my prints. We decided that place was not too important and pulled over by the curb and parked just anywhere. I got out of the car with a box of 10x14 prints and my camera and slipped off the curb and fell backwards and landing on my back in the gutter banging my elbow and head and destroying my camera and lens. Blood all over my arm, but I was O.K. and happy to sit on the curb to recover and then start showing my prints and feeling very happy at not being hurt too bad. To photograph is to love constantly. How Ironic the man who came along to watch, said he was from the area where I made some of the photos I was showing. Photography has produced many magic moments in my time.

It's incredible and so inspirational to see you talk through your process. The essence of photography as you describe here it is actually so simple, yet takes a talented artist, with a lifetime of seeing and constant practice such as you show here to get right. Very sorry to hear about your camera - I hope you've managed to get it fixed.

Amazing. You are so inspirational. Fond memories from the Paris workshop where we met. Still think about how fast you were when you saw situations building up. Your voice saying: "Booom... subject's gone." to explain the importance of sometimes being quick. That has helped me a lot, especially when just killing off hesitation to bring up the camera and shoot. Thanks for helping me make more better photos.

I really admire your work and how you handle all these people in the Streets, how you can be a part of what you photograph. I am at the beginning of photography, I bought my second hand camera less than a year ago and I know, I have to learn so much about seeing and being aware of everything arround me...I just started to realize, that there is so much more to see and to see in different ways as I saw before. I also do not have much time (because of my Medicine studies) and if I have enough to go out, I sometimes coming home after that without any good shot and very discouraged, without feelings that I am not creativ enough take ever any good shots. But then I saw your videos. You and your work inspired me to go on trying and learning. I really wish I could spend just a day with you in the streets. Thank you very much!!

Every photographer should feel lucky to have someone like John on youtube. All the advices he gives in his video are priceless and very precious. So incredible. His work is just wonderful, unique compositional precision and vision, combined with a great sensitivity for the decisive moment. True master. It may be personal taste but if you don't recognize the beauty and the greatness in his work, you're either dishonest with yourself or you don't know anything about photography.

Wonderful photos and very insightful analysis. You can definitely hear the decades of experience in his words. I love how he always has a Nikon F3 around his neck! It's a beautiful, no-nonsense workhorse of a camera and it matches his personality very well. However, I do wish this video was taken with a mounted / stabilized camera so that it was easier to see the entire frames of the photographs as he discussed them.

My goodness, John. These are the absolute best artistic photos I have EVER laid my eyes on! They moved me to tears some of them. The one with the figure on the beach, left the crutch behind, and the shadow of the lamp post on the bridge pointing to the figure! Just fabulous. Also, towards the end of the video, the letter to Mom from her children, as she was reading it, tells a story a million words could not tell. The Veteran at the cemetery says so much about his feelings of war and his friends who passed. All of your work transcends through time the glorious feelings of having lived. I thank you so very much for posting this video. I will contact you via FB.
