RHCP was my favorite band when I was a kid since like age 8 or 9, but in HS I worshipped Kurt Cobain and Bradley Nowell and Layne Staley and went through my own almost death and when I was using as an adult John Frusciante's music and the way he survived and came out intact and talented as ever meant so much to me and helped me hold on. And it means so much to me today now that I'm a normal healthy adult, and getting the opportunity to see him with the band after thinking I might not ever get the chance is incredible!

I saw and met John on the Nutstalk tour in 1997 (just 2 years before this interview) and though he still seems kind of fragile here.....I cannot believe he turned his life and health around this much in just 2 years. In 1997 when I met him and watched him perform...my friend and I both felt certain that he would not be long for this world. It was bleak to say the least. John was extremely irritable and frankly looked like a dying man...and though at that time it is rumored he was off Heroin in 97...he was most definitely smokimg crack and still heavily using drugs....but his physical condition was staggering to see in person. I know there is an interview with him and Gibby Haynes from 1997 floating around on the internet and in that video though John is much more lucid than he was when I met him...he was still clearly having a hard time completing thoughts and would stutter and stammer a lot when he spoke. Watching these older interviews of him from 94, 97, 99 and now in 2021 etc....it really is nothing short of remarkable that he managed to pull himself back up. Definitely grateful he got through those dark years and that we have all been lucky enough to enjoy the man and his music for several more years.

A lot of people are familiar with junkies they know. They’ll be people using for 6 months a year or two maybe more, frequently running out of money. John on the other hand had an unlimited flow of money to shoot yo his arm. The avg junkie will be on cloud 9 after 30 days clean. But these 5+ year daily binges, you’re not ok for YEARS. Oh ok - that makes more sense. That interview is wild. My favorite part is when he says, exasperatedly: "A funk guitarist is not what I am." Hearing him state that so matter-of-factly 5 years after he had quit the band and barely played guitar is strange. It seems even then his memories of being a Chili Pepper and perception of his public image as a guitarist were still fresh and hitting a nerve. @@clinteastwood6875

Anthony's animosity towards John probably grew even after John left the band, and especially when Anthony realized what an actual loss it was, with One Hot Minute not being received as well as BSSM. Anthony had to learn to get over that for this to work again, and to be fair, he is a lot more humble here than he was in interviews during BSSM. That realization for Anthony would have hurt a lot, but it was something he had to go through if he wanted the band to continue. Whereas John was able to learn much earlier that having an ego is detrimental to one's creative process, even though that process almost killed him. It truly was so lucky for them and us fans that they both came out of it at basically the same time, otherwise we wouldn't have the music we have today. It's sounds cheesy, but the stars literally aligned for them to come together again.
@jasonsguitarjourney20602 жыл бұрын
BSSM is such masterpiece though, I don't think anything they could have that would have as well received.

@Kristin P As a teenager, Frusciante joined the band which he loved the most; he idolised Flea and AK looking up to them both as role models. They were older than him and should have known better than to allow him to become alienated. AK teased him mercilessly and the teasing became bullying. He was competitive and envious instead of being nurturing, supportive and kind. No wonder Fru suffered psychological damage and turned to pain killing drugs. He came through it building strength and determination, but my belief is he let his friends off lightly.

@@DanRelayer_Ukraine It’s partly true, success especially in the field of art (not the modern pop stars) means you are obliged to act and live a certain way to keep that image and formula alive. Frusciante probably liked his own ritual of things where he could write, perform, explore and do drugs the way he had before. Also he was so younger than the other two who had lived out their younger underground years and were hungry for mega success.

I feel bad for John being self conscious about his teeth at this time. He laughed at one point freely and you can see him remember to put his hand over his mouth.

Oh don’t feel too bad @Tyler Gray ; he ended up with one hell of a Hollywood smile 😊

John's got a lot of wisdom and insight. The problem is with you if you feel confused.
@samuelsmall9913 ай бұрын
@@TheStarBlackit’s okay to admit that the dude was extremely out of it at this point in his life. The brain takes a lot of time to heal, and he had pushed his body and mind to the limit with his drug use. This interview is really not that far removed from the time he got sober. He still had a lot of mental hurdles to get through to get to the point he’s at today. Point being, yes he has meaningful ideas, but he was indeed babbling quite a bit during this video while trying to communicate them lol.

I did not know that all saints did a cover of under the bridge so I've just had a listen and it is horrendous lol

Even if you’re a top tier band, choosing to cover that song is an awful decision, it should absolutely stand on its own

Anthony keeps taking such deep breaths hahaha. It looks like torture for him. And no doubt that would be a tough conversation to have, much less with a camera in your face. Props to him for riding it out and being patient. A younger version of himself might have been more aggressive or agitated (I know I would have been when I was younger if a journalist had been pressing us like that).

I’d love to know how much of John’s brain had to die for that addiction. Clearly it wasn’t enough to stop him from making unbelievable music

@axemansjazz66703 жыл бұрын
I think it's probably one of those things where it's like, even though John chose to leave the band, Dave took his place. Kind of like if you choose to leave a relationship with someone you care about and they move on and find someone else, it'll make you uncomfortable seeing that person in what was "your" place. A bit of jealousy, in a sense, but nothing unhealthy or petty. Just a natural, human kinda thing.
@hugthesky68103 жыл бұрын
@@axemansjazz6670yeah, that's what I've been thinking, that's why the look on his face looks like he's feeling offended at the moment they're talking about Dave. I like your thoughts on it though, very nicely put! :)
