And a Knight! I'm sure he thought along the same lines of Sir Alec Guinness. They had done so much more "quality" theater, that they didn't understand the importance of their roles. I think John learned a bit from Alec and Star Wars. He made sure to get paid. And, he got a well deserved Oscar.

I'm my opinion Sir John Gielgud was the greatest actor in the English language and that includes Olivier.

I could not agree with you more. Whether it be on stage, in a movie or spoken word recording he had a presence that held your attention. When you look at his movie performances as a whole, he won the Academy Award for calling Arthur "a little sh*t"

I would've loved to see him go onstage and make a few satirical swipes at Hollywood and films in general. These quips exemplify: [to Richard Burton on seeing Burton's first "Hamlet"] "I'll come back and see it when you're better." [on reading bad reviews] "It's wonderful when it isn't you." [on Claude Rains] "He was a great influence on me. I don't know what happened to him. I think he failed and went to America."

It's too bad Gielgud was such a snob about Oscars because he accepted other awards for this delightful performance as Hobson, the acid-tongued manservant, one of the flat-out funniest ever put to film. Of course, Steve Gordon gave him priceless lines to say, but he put his own personal stamp on them as no one else could have done. Like this one to Liza Minnelli: "One usually has to go to a bowling alley to meet a woman of your stature."
