This song is a classic and virtually no one has figured it out yet. Thanks John. You're a national treasure. A beautiful balad that will age like a fine wine with the ages.

Known of him since his "Two Bit Monster" days when he was one of the 'angry songwriters' of the L.A. new wave scene in the early 1980s. The title kind of explains itself to me, as he left California and his vices behind, moved to Nashville (or was it Memphis?) and started writing better tunes with a country influence. Good for him and all of us who appreciate good music.

The man has been through hell. His daughter, Lilly, was about 1 year old when his wife committed suicide. He sometimes thinks he wasn't the one who accomplished all of his great work. (He suffers from Imposter Syndrome. Look that up!) Recently, he had to delay shows for almost a year and a half due to a skull fracture and other injuries he suffered while hiking. Through it all, he keeps creating songs that define the careers of some of our favorite artists. I've been lucky enough to have seen him many times and he's never failed to impress me. I wish him and Lilly long happy lives. I hope to see them both out on the road more.

I play this song very often on my guitar, it's a nice song to sing and play, like a lot of oJohn's songs. They all tell a story.... I discovered his music at 16 years old when his album "The tiki bar is open" just came out, ever since I'm a big fan!

This song is about his first wife's suicide and John's leaving California for Nashville with a baby to take care of. The line, "two cigarettes from the package gone, you must have thought about it just that long" is brilliant.

My brother used to listen to this song on repeat, we lived together for 3 years in a small shity city, we allways wanted to leave it. We got in a stupid fight, so we dont talk anymore. I heard he left the country and went to Germany. Every time I listen to this song i imagine him smoking 2 cigarretes and leaving for the better life. I guess this is the only way to apologise to him, that is if he sees this comment... Love the song
