Imagination and dexterity. Surely as a player and creator he has no equal. His works are unfathomable for the majority of players, including me.

He had some lessons on Homespun Tapes and I bought one set. It came with tab and the tape was him doing a step by step playing (one song was 'Ragtime Millionaire'). This was audio by the way and not video. His records on Kicking Mule came with at least some tab copy for songs. John was the catalyst for me buying my first Fylde guitar. He had the Oberon, which I think is the one in this video. I can hardly play the way he is, but his other non-rag songs such as "Head in the Clouds" is absolutely breathtaking. Renbourn did a tribute song to him ("John's Rag") and they played on each other's albums. And a nice guy too; I had a brief correspondence with him (by mail) in the 80's.

@@natepicker436 Hi. Yes I have the tapes and they helped me to work out the original version of Picture Rags, to an extent. I've got two songs on my channel, worked out by listening endlessly to them on Morning Brings the Light.

Amazing guitarist, he deserves far more recognition. Thanks for putting this up.

Another comment from someone is Amazon says "John James is a fantastic guitarist who never gets the recognition he deserves." Funny but I believe this is true. Yet it happens, more or less, to most (if not all) of the accoustic guitarists (Pierre Bensusan, John Renbourn, Marcel Dadi, Stefan Grossman, Davey Graham, etc.) For some "unknown/strange" reason, ordinary people get trapped by electric guitar sounds...;-( I think that appreciating finger-picking guitar solos require a musical knowledge and understanding of the different lines (bass, accompaniment chords and melody, plus rythm sometimes) a single guitar, in capable hands, can play.

I know John James from the "good old times", when I listened to his "In Concert" live record, 1971, I think. Glad to see him (say, listen to him) around again.

Great playing. Isn't this some tune by Blind Blake?
