Dave and John also dive into his mind-blowing performances this year that has led him to the current World No. 1 position on the rankings heading into Fiji and locking his seat at the Lexus WSL Finals at Lower Trestles for a chance at a third World Title. He talks about his mindset entering 2024 and the ups and downs of the competitive surfing life. He reflects on how he went from not being too sure if he was going to compete this year and having “one foot in, one foot out” the past few years to being fully committed heading into 2024. So true. He lives life beautifully in so many ways -- his passion for what he does, whether it is surfing or sailing, his humble attitude, how he's like a child with his endless fascination with the world, his love of friends and family, and his ability to think out of the box -- you see that in his surfing, how he approaches a wave like no one has up to that point (like Margaret River), and his approach to adversity amazes me. The way he approached healing as an exploration was something all of us could learn from.

John is my favorite surfer so far beyond anyone else that he's in another class. I think he is truly an artist as a surfer. I also think he brings such passion and vision to all that he does that it draws people in. Like his sailing trips captivated me as much as his surfing. And finally he just emanates good guy energy so much that I find myself smiling through every interview he has. I wish him the best for the rest of the year. And I will hate to see him leave competitive surfing because it means I won't be watching much of it anymore, except big wave. But I really hope for him that he cuts himself loose to pursue his other dreams
