SCI-Arc student Dina Silverman introduces the lecture series followed by Michael Rotondi who introduces to John Lautner.
Lautner begins by distinguishing his own work from media-driven merchandise. He discusses a cabin his father built in northern Michigan. He describes arriving in Los Angeles and how he managed to get started without any financial backing. He discusses distinctive techniques, such as his use of independent roof structures and his solution for leaking window panes.
Lautner discusses projects as specific solutions to a number of design problems. He gives an example of a mountain cabin in Idyllwild. He also discusses some of his residential projects and his relationship to the client requests. He jokes about his ability to build on un-buildable lots, his refusal to use retaining walls, and his use of concrete.
Lautner discusses his work on larger scale projects, and presents a slide of a text by Bruno Zevi.

Interesting how I came upon a video about “The Bob Hope House” to then be curious of the man who did the original design. Finding out he was from home state of Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, to be in realm of inspiring future generations not even born yet. God Bless the internet the person who preserved this and post it.

Good architecture allows people to dream in 3D. Lautner embraced every detail, from inside to out which let him create true magic. His love for people showed in every house he ever built which put him above and beyond most architects. Lautner was a beautiful soul and was a godsend to us all. 2022 and the horrors we face going forward are beyond description. It seemed like over night, a severe and heavy darkness blanketed the world. This wonderful presentation on Lautner's work allowed me to escape and dream about something beautiful, if just for an hour. Thank you.

for the publishers of this remarkable video, thank you, thank you, thank you. As an architect and possibly one of Lautner's greatest admirers it is an extraordinary pleasure to meet the man. He exceeded my anticipations. Not just a genius but a mensch. Heartfelt appreciation.

Quite ironic how he personally tried to reject glamour but his buildings are exactly that. Great human being

I think a person like John Lautner shows we can think and create outside the bounds of the usual stuff, ourselves. He shows we can and should.... just a house owner here and a fan of his ides houses , structures and nature...Laurie NZ

I am a bit late learning his name. His effect on our world, in cool ways, has enhanced without fanfare. Cheers John Lautner

I would have given my right arm to have a chance to sit down and listen to this guy talk for hours, i have just a passion for design and just never had anyone share my passion or even have anyone to talk with. I design for family when i can and at least have an outlet for my passion, i can say my style is that i need to feel the design for it to work for me. My family don't get it.
