One finding I had in my tree was my 12th great aunt was convicted in the Salem witch trials. After finding that I looked into the court records on her. Reading her plea of innocence was shaking with the realization that connection.

I was unable to know much about my Latin history (sadly), and I'm not done searching... But I learnt that on my grandfathers, perternal side, 400 yrs ago they moved from Germany to Russia. Then 300 yrs ago they moved to Argentina (where my dads family is from). I was born in Australia and sometimes it's hard to feel included and not invisible as a latino, but I am very very proud of my heritage (my mum is also from el salvador) ❤️

Hadih (Hello, Babine Carrier Déne). I am also Indigenous but in B.C. Canada. I grew up with my "Needo" (White) family and did not know my Indigenous side. My Indigenous At'soo (grandmother) and all my relatives were stolen and jailed in the Residential Schools. I've been told many stories of us having a Hereditary Name and Lands. My great aunt was one of the last medicine women of our Nation and was beloved. Since, I have also found my 5th great grandfather was an English Reverend of course in England. His son, my uncle, one of the most highly decorated soldiers of time. He was knighted for the Queen and was even buried at Windsor Castle. There is a brass place to honor the lineage. I relate to John on many levels, including not realizing I was an "Other", until the world around me told me so! I had the same feeling when I started doing some work for my Mother who had become interested in our family history. Once you learn of your ancestors, you do indeed start to realize your birth wan not just a spontaneous event. You are a link in the chain of your ancestors and one day perhaps, someone will find your name as they too, search for a reason for their existence. It will move you and often to tears!

Sorry for the and/ors but yeah, i think it can be any of those interpretations. In this case, I'd go with the someone very important and highly revered within their community/tribe.

It was because of Ancestry’s information that I was able to complete a lot of my genealogy research, where I found my direct ancestors were the Princes and Dukes of Salci. My story was similar in that the descendant was a prince who was a 4th son. He had a natural son with a black woman from St. Thomas. There was nothing on the birth certificate of course, but the father confirmed paternity. Through message boards and other family trees I was able to complete my ancestry with over 20,000 people on both sides of my family! It’s a different feeling when you can know where you’re from.

The current international Laws are based on the Law which was created by the Spanish Empire for America, because is a legal model of respect of different cultures. That’s why THEY ARE STILL THERE TODAY. And that’s why Spain created grammar and dictionary for local indigenous languages BEFORE the British even had their own dictionary in ENGLISH. The British killed everyone in Australia, that’s why they are white today there. Regarding USA, British arrive to America 100 years LATER than Spain, and they were kicked out 100 before than the Spanish, precisely because the lack of freedom British Colony had. The Hispanic America claimed their independence because France invaded European Spain, and they did not want to be French. I too would love to hear about my ancestry. I know that my mother and my grandmother (mother's side) was Native American Indian but I'm not sure of much more than that. And I know practically nothing of my fathers side. I wouldn't even begin to know how to research either side. Imagine my surprise when my cousin found out that we were direct line descent from the last high king of tir conell aka that last high king of Ireland and my my family’s kingdom is now MOST of Northern Ireland and that my family was sent to the far corners of the earth BY THE ENGLISH CROWN! I have the rarest surname in all of Ireland. 1% of my family still lives in our ancestral seat and the rest of us reside in the English colonies. There are so many records of family members accused of being witches and being killed for their land, made enemies of the crown and shipped off to the prison colonies of the Americas, New Zealand and Australia. Genealogy has proven who my dad’s family is and our history in the world. Hell one of my ancestors has a lake in Ontario, Canada named after him (Muldrew Lake) So many amazing people in my ancestry that I’m proud to know of and share the stories with my own children just like my dad did with us and my grandfather with him ❤

After watching his extremely progressive film “Latin History for Morons” he would despise his Spanish 7th grandfather but ONLY The Spanish recognized our indigenous community as NOBLE. Generalizing ALL Europeans and ALL indigenous during the conquest of the Americas is what splits our Hispanic-American community and he participated in that process dramatically in his film. It was disheartening to watch he never mentioned The first universities of The New World or Western Hemisphere were first chartered in 1551 beginning with Perú, México, República Dominicana, Colombia etc BEFORE the British colonial college in the North as Harvard or the fact that Queen Isabella put Colombus in jail for continuously abusing the Taínos, on her death bed, she forbade her family to treat the Taíno as slaves. Hispanic-Americans are tired of being used as Proxies to defend a genocide by comparing or GENERALIZING Spain with the rest of European settlers.

You're disregarding the Revolutionary colonial period when the Spaniards strictly taxed and imposed unfair (e.g. public hangings) and corrupt rule on everyday Mestizos (who were largely discriminated for not being born in Spain). Those taxes, those goods and natural resources, that farm & slave labor went back to replenish and build what is a modern Spain. One cannot dismiss the last 400 years of continuous decimating indigenous populations and the societal pushback they face or the large disparity between the haves and the have nots. While I agree being referred to as a noble Indian is endearing, it's also not enough to forget how much our colonizers robbed us. Moreover, that script is from an earlier colonial age when folks were probably still in "adapting to their surroundings" survival mode.

Do you think the leader of the S American revolution Simon Bolivar was a native american??? No he was another pure race spaniard. In fact he was from extremly distinguished spanish ancestry, from a very high noble family. Spanish fought "criollos", not mestizos or native americans. Criollos were white spanish born in americas, some of them decided to revolt against the king and get all the power for themselves following english advice. Native americans and mestizos fought in both armies, spanish army and rebel army. But once they got the independence while Spain fought Napoleon, they lost half of their territory in north america against the english colonialist. Native americans by the way were not classified as inferior by white spanish it was considered that pure native american ancestry was clean heritage. For that reason spanish wrote and noted all noble native american families and clans, aswell as languages. Spanish built universities to teach the children of native american noble families. In fact there are 500 known decendants from the aztec emperor Moctezuma, some of them live in Spain. Mexico is a republic, but if it decides to become a monarchy, the person with more rights to become "queen of Mexico" is Maricarmen de Luna, she lives in Spain as an aristocrath, and decends from both the aztec king Moctezuma and the conquistador of Mexico Hernan Cortes.

I have discovered many interesting things concerning my family over the last couple years of research including discovering some were Italian nobility and that one family branch even claims to be the descendants of the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos. Moctezuma has a statue in the Royal Palace in Madrid beside the other spanish Kings and Queens and their descendants own a palace up to this day. One of the Moctezuma's descendants founded the Spanish Guardia Civil. History was not as they have told you. Spanish recorded everything, so you can find the truth by yourself. Find about what Alexander Von Humboldt wrote about his travels to Hispanic America. We were all Spanish, the same country.

I’ve watched Finding Your Roots for soooo many years and have seen them find ancestors without knowing one of the parents (mother or father). That’s where I’m lost. I never knew my father and I no longer have anyone to ask. 😭😭😭.

May I offer my suggestions? If you haven't already, take an Ancestry DNA test. The algorithm will then start looking for matches. Your father will, obviously, have parents. Possibly he will have siblings, and most likely have aunts and uncles, who will all have children. You can start looking at the trees for those matches, especially the ones that are "close" (ie 1st & 2nd cousins, etc). As you explore _their_ stories, you'll probably come across clues to your own father's story. It's kind of like radar, where you do pings from multiple angles and it helps you triangulate. Also, if you know / knew your mother, you can review the details for her life around the time you were born. Combining those details with information from close DNA matches, you might see some possible overlap in time and place. That would help you take a step closer. Don't give up hope if it takes a long time to make any progress. Technology is always getting better. And others are doing their own research that might one day pop up as a clue for you. And be sure to use other sites and information sources, including library collections etc. Think of it like a really long scavenger hunt.

At times, I even convince myself to “just forget” it. But, I ALWAYS get the passion for searching again. I’ve contacted several DNA matches from those who come from the region of my father’s Country to no avail. You’re right, though. Ancestry and technology changes. I keep hoping.

@@khansahb-o4e if he grew up surrounded by Puerto Ricans, Puerto Rican culture, food, dancing, dialect, etc., and somehow his parents didn't clarify his origins, it's possible he genuinely thought he was. On my mother's side, there was a lot of lore her father's side about having Irish and Native American herirage, along with a direct line into Germany. My genealogical research has shown me that this was improbable except maybe by individuals married into the family without bearing children or perhaps in a line of very distant cousins that would have no bearing on my genetic makeup. There are, however, lots of British people we all had no idea about who had escaped religious persecution from England. So maybe these people went incognito as other nationalities by the time the American Revolution came about?

My mother and aunt have done extensive research on our family history on my grandmother's side and have gone as far back as 500 years. They've tried with my grandfather's side but ran into a problem where they discovered her was actually adopted and took the surname Vasquez from the family that took him in. His surname was originally Gonzalez. They haven't been able to dive any further and have at this point just given up searching as they get older. I personally would like to continue the search. I've never met him because he died when my mother was a teenager. I'm named after him, John, though his name is Juan. As I was growing up the family would always make comments that I'm a carbon copy of him, in looks, demeanor, how I stand, speak, laugh, everything. Makes me feel blessed in a way and I feel like I have a deeper connection with him.

After watching so many of these, 50 plus easily on a binge, it seems that keeping your ancestors in mind and thought brings forth some kind of generational knowledge, if you will. Empowering. Maybe this is what's meant when people describe ancestor "worship". Maybe "worship" isn't the term that they should use. Connecting with your ancestors would be a better term maybe. I bet most people don't know much past their grandparents. Now I think I have to do this. I'm only 3rd generation American though and only know my great grandfather's name, who came here as a 6 yr old boy. I have one of the sweaters he wore as an old man. Not to take anything away from the amount of effort that went into the research and it's certainly very interesting, but the findings are not that incredible when you think about it. You can pick any person and going back 6 generations, you'd have 6^2=64 direct ancestors, while going back 7 generation you'd have 7^2=128 direct ancestors. All those people survived rough times long enough to leave at least one child. So the chances are at least some of them would have interesting stories to tell. It's probably not possible to find information on all of those people, but if it's able to be done, the chances are it would be on those interesting ones.

@@seferinothat’s not what he meant. For example my friend is Salvadorian and grew up in a all Mexican community so he grew up culturally Mexican, he still salvadorian though. Same with JL, he grew up in a mostly Puerto Rican neighborhood. At the end of the day we are all brothers and sisters.

See, this is what I like about the Portuguese and the Spanish colonialism - that unlike their British counterparts, they didn't annihilate the entire race of people from the continents. They believed in converting the natives to Christianity rather than exterminating them like the British. And this comes from their Catholic background and them being a mixed race people with Arab admixture because of nearly 7 centuries of Arab Muslim rule in al-Andalusia. I'm not justifying colonialism and imperialism at all. I'm just making a comparison between the Portuguese/Spanish colonialism and British colonialism. That's why South and Central America have a huge Spanish admixture as many Spaniards intermarried or had illegitimate children with the Native populations. Whereas Canada and America (and also Australia) have a very tiny minority of Native population as most of them were massacred in a systematic and systemic way.

When I was much younger, I lived in NYC. A group of my friends were walking along the street and saw this sweet dog. We asked the owner if we could pet him and his owner allowed it but treated us as if we were the dregs of society. All we wanted was to greet his adorable pet. We realized afterwards that it was a famous actor. We vowed never to approach another celebrity (or pet) as this experience left us feeling small and, strangely, uneducated. Years later, the same group, saw John walking along the street. The energy he exuded was SO different - it was kind, sweet and approachable. I wish we did stop him, but we just smiled and watched him pass. I'll never forget it! I loved him then and love him now.

That’s one thing you can say about the Catholic Church in Mexico at the time. They were very methodical in birth, baptism, deaths and often wills left to the church. They recorded everything sometimes the method of death. I have found many of my ancestors and have crossed to Europe lines many times before the arrival to the Americas.

I made my own tree, and the first 500 years my ancestros are from México, South Easth Usa, Aztec, Incas, and then after that I have lines to England, south Rusia, North Africa and España!!
