Lennon is sheer delight to see him be himself, without Yoko and in good spirits. The charisma of the man never fades. Miss you John.

Have you listened to his last couple of interviews. One was two days before he died, and the other was on the day he died. And he was exactly like this, and Yoko was there. All this BS about Yoko, we saw plenty of his natural personality with her around. John was just angry and bitter about the break up in the late 60’s/early 70’s, but as you can tell here, it was all out of his system and he was himself again. Nothing to do with Yoko

This interview should be an addendum to the "Get Back" documentary. This is John as he truly was a few years after the Beatles broke up. He's relaxed, enjoying life, making great music, he has a happy family life and has a good relationship with all of his old band mates. "Rock and Roll", the album by John is one of my favorites because he is sharing his passion for music with his audience. I was a young man when John was taken from this world and I am an old man now. Yes. Hugely important figure on Radio & TV in the UK since the 70's: immersed in music since his earliest days, like Gambaccini he's one of those few who has an encyclopaedic memory of pretty much all that has happened in popular music down 50 years. All the Whistle Tests are great - some of the greatest early-career appearances of endless great performers. In later years Bob has become deeply interested in Country music, and has given many of us a better appreciation of it through some of the programmes he's made and performers he's profiled on TV & Radio.

Agreed re Bob Harris, he sat back and let John talk as a great interviewer should. And John shone because of it! Gentle soul is exactly the right description of John Lennon, he had matured so much by the age of34 and was an 'old soul'. He owned his past mistakes and learned from them. At this point he was about to enjoy the happiest 5 years of his life at home, raising his second child, Sean. Thankfully he didn't know they would be his last years alive, and awoke every day with optimism in his adopted city, New York. As the wise old adage goes: "It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive". God bless you John.

A brilliant interview. John drops his guard here. Fascinating. He is such a beautiful soul. People need to be very careful when reading about John Lennon. A lot of what is written about him is not the truth. There is no way the other Beatles, George Martin and others close would have loved him so very deeply, and they did, if he were as some have attempted to portray him. Also, the incredibly beautiful music he has left us could have only come from an incredibly beautiful soul. Such music cannot come from a soul who is otherwise. It is impossible. He was as his music is. As below, so above.

boscoco - I met John in March 1980 and he was so nice to me being a starstruck 11yr old and his mother. From what I understand from others who met John over the years that he was always nice to fans signing autographs and taking photos with people. He felt somewhat responsible for his fans and owed them something if they approached him. It would have been interesting to see how that would have changed over the years and would he have turned out like Paul and Ringo who are very off putting to their fans.

Yes, I(we) agree - recording can be quite satisfying. Gigs can be a hassle & transitory.

He was the funniest and most colorful character, and he really shines in this interview. Bob really disarms with his gentle and respectful demeanor. Great look into Lennon’s world at a good time in his life.

People talk trash about the ‘lost weekend’ period of John’s life, but in my opinion it was a blessing for his fans, and more importantly his family. We all got to catch a glimpse of the REAL John one last time, before he returned to Yoko fully.

People talk trash? I mean for John it contained a lot of drinking and depression at times, but for fans they love that period

What a bummer we didn’t get to see Lennons style choices in the 80’s and 90’s. Imagine Lennon coming out at Nirvana unplugged ….. all the magic we lost.

Lovely to see the gentle side of Lennon.

I must have watched this interview 30 times. In the 70's, I remember watching him during his interviews and as every year past he became more comfortable talking about himself and being more supportive of working with the other 3. Then he vanished for 5 years. Then he was taken. Godspeed John. You are missed.

He certainly went through some ups and downs emotionally. Its hard to reconcile the warm and witty guy in this interview with the dark and bitter guy on Lennons lost diaries. I suppose that is what made him such a fascinating character. There were so many sides to John. He could be a bastard as well as a really sweet guy. Can't we all?

Sean Whittaker at least he was never one thing, and that was fake. He was always real.

The reason why John Lennon was known as the cynical hard-edged man was because he went through unpleasant things as a child.
@Crisstti7 жыл бұрын
Sorry but no. John was not always real. He could be very manipulative and liked to play the press (which he could do with ease, but much smarter than the lot of them). Here, you can see he's not playing games but is actually being real. Which is why it's such a great interview.

12:45 It sounds like John discovered that Phil Spector was COMPLETELY insane almost 30 years before it was proven without a doubt. He was too polite to say it outright here in this interview.
@UtahGetMe23 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, right you are! I recently purchased the plastic Ono band deluxe set, and the hot mic moments with John referencing Phil are something else. At one point, John just loudly says ,”our producer isn’t here because he’s a junkie c*#t!” The surprising thing is that he would continue to work with him for a few albums.

"John Lennon the serious writer". Yoko made everything so serious and message driven and it only worked to block him -- for 5 years! Seems the only times he could write again were when he could get away from her -- 18 MONTHS IN L.A. and then 2 MONTHS IN BERMUDA. Then it all came tumbling out.

@waterfalls51948 жыл бұрын
+Randi Brooks Yoko ALWAYS controlled John. They NEVER had an equal relationship. She was boss, what she said went, and John toed the line! She played mind games with him, and terrorized him with threats of abandonment...John didn't do independence well, he NEEDED someone with him all the time. Look at his life pattern ( Pete Shotten, Paul, Cynthia, Stu, Paul, Brian, Paul, Yoko, May Pang, Harry Nilsson, May Pang, Yoko) And if you think he had his act together, and was a bread baking, baby Sean diapering, happy househubby feminist, while his live in cook, nanny, maid played cards and wrote songs, you are delusional and have dranked the Ono/Lennon estate koolaid. Read more than Yoko sanctioned articles and books.Yoko controlled John with drugs, threats, hypnosis and superstition. You are either one of Yoko's paid PR or you are a clueless volunteer Yoko defender. If you're going to defend her, GET PAID FOR IT! Others do.

Whispering Bob got the best out of John in this particular interview. Very relaxed and jovial. To me, John's biggest contribution, aside from his music, was the attitude that it was always worthwhile to defy people's expectations of him. As soon as he had the power to, he did things his way and never really looked back.

The best Lennon interview you’re likely to see. He’s honest, clean and not pushing any agenda. It was also a time he was getting back with Yoko. Sadly he “retired” from the music business after this for about 5 years and then returned with Double Fantasy and we all know what happened 😪😪
