Bob Wilkin and Mike Lii of the Grace Evangelical Society examines two videos from John MacArthur, one video from 1979 and another video from 2022. Both videos answer the questions of "What must I do to be saved?" and "How can I know for sure I am saved?" The answers by John MacArthur in 1979 are very different from the answers in 2022. Bob and Mike conclude that the Bible doesn't teach to look into ourselves for assurance but to look to Jesus and His certain promise of everlasting life to everyone who believes in Him for everlasting life.

that's not the question. the question is how do you know He "paid it all *_for you_* ? and JM has switched his theology from claiming ANYONE can know they are "saved" IF they believe on Jesus ...but now, his theology is that ONLY the "elect" are saved and NO ONE can know who the "elect" are until AFTER death so you really won't know is saved until we find outr if God chose us for salvation b4 the world was formed.... but you can guess who are God's "elect" by your own behavior.. bc an "elect person" will demonstrate "regenerate" behavior, like sinning less, "loving" good things, and loving God. It is a false gospel and John McArthur has become a heretic.

So sad to see the change in MacArthur from his younger years. So many Christians get mixed up in Lordship salvation or Calvinism. I fell into Lordship salvation myself. I always knew that salvation was through faith alone, but took scriptures from James and 1 John out of context and determined it to mean that if someone is truly saved, they would have the works to back it up. So glad I finally found the truth again! I still see so many pastors, many well meaning I believe, that subtly mix faith and works.

@2Chronicles714_ Hello again! You must be a serial YT commenter! Jack Hyles was never really Free Grace in the classic sense but jumped on the bandwagon after the debate broke out towards the later part of the 1980's among dispensational conservative Christians he would have denounced as insufficiently separatist 'neo-evangelicals'. That whole IFB orbit around Jack Hyles and First Baptist Church Hammond has produced no end of rotten fruit as the well documented scandals have all too clearly proved with a long trail of horribly abused victims A very Happy Christmas to you and all your household.

@Philip_325 There is no way to faith except through repentance. Any other claims to get you there is deception. True faith is impossible without repentance. The foundation of the Christian faith is Jesus Christ. Anyone who claims to be a Christian has to build their life on that foundation. Building on the foundation is hearing and doing what Jesus said. Hebrews 6:1-3 [This is the doctrinal foundation of the Christian faith, and it lists 6 doctrines] 1Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles [or basic truths] of Christ, let us go on to perfection,[completion or maturity] not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works (sins) and of faith (belief) toward God. 2of the doctrine of baptisms,(water and baptism of the Holy Spirit) laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3And this we will do if God permits. First of all it's essential to lay the foundation. If you've never laid the foundation you can never do the building. That takes us from the very starting point in the Christian faith to its ultimate fulfillment in eternity. It's very important to see that the Christian faith does not terminate in this life. It takes us beyond this world beyond time into eternity. Paul says if we only in this life have faith in Christ we are of all men the most miserable, the most to be pitied. Verse 3 says this we will do if God permits. Our foundation needs to be laid to God's requirements. Repentance from dead works. Anything not done in faith is a dead work.(Sin) We have to turn from anything not done in faith. Faith alone gives life to what we believe and what we do. Repentance is not an emotion it springs from the will. There are 2 main languages in the Bible Greek in the new, and Hebrew in the old The Greek means to change your mind and the Hebrew means to turn away from. Put the 2 together and you have complete picture of repentance. The whole message of the Bible is in this order, Repent and believe. Jesus the disciples and Paul all made it very clear all people must repent of sin.

@@2Chronicles714_ Did you bother reading the rest of the Word of God for context? James was addressed to the brethren who are saved. Faith without works is dead toward man and we are justified before man by our works BUT NOT BEFORE GOD. Romans 4 clearly explains that we are NOT justified by our works but by FAITH only are we justified before God. Romans 4 Romans 4 1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

I don't like finger pointing preachers. They should talk to one another if they don't agree. Hearing what another man preaches is all I need to hear. I judge it by the Word of God and the witness of the HS. God is solid, lol, He doesn't change. And I don't care what people say. Not one word has changed in my Bible. Because I was a member in a heavily works to prove faith type church for over two decades and became a teacher and elder some things trigger me. When Pastor John rephrased the question from assurance to “so all you want to know - is my salvation forever” something triggered. First it sounds like an innocent rephrasing and probably is. But The rephrasing to is your salvation forever subtly may indicate there is another salvation that may not be forever. The eternal salvation only goes to the persevering Saint that does or has his 4 indicators. The other salvation is temporal and belongs to Christians that are walking in the light but end up falling away.

Great job brothers, mcarther is so confusing. Like when he speaks of obedience, he says a saved person needs a willingness to obey. Do they just need the willingness, or do they have to actually carry out the obedience? I think there plenty of believers who have a willingness, but carrying it out is very difficult in this horribly broken world with all its temptations, addictions, pitfalls etc.

@alvinfen4511 Thanks . Yeah because the "Gospel" (good news) , always begs the question : "Good news about WHAT , exactly (?)" So Wilkin thinks that the apostle Paul's Gospel doesn't contain the equivalent message of the book of John , essentially ? Is that a fair assessment ? Here's a quote from Wilkin concerning Ultra Dispensationalism who have 2 separate and distinct "gospels" , and deny that the book of John is for Gentiles: "It should be noted that “Paul’s gospel” is Jesus’ gospel (Gal 1:11-12). Paul did not change or replace the promise of life which the Lord Jesus preached. Compare John 6:28-29 with Eph 2:8-9. Compare John 3:16 with 1 Tim 1:16. Notice how Acts 16:31 is saying that same thing as John 3:17-18. Galatians 3:6-14 is repeating the message found all throughout John’s Gospel." So , it's not clear to me how to reconcile the above quote , with what you've indicated . Help me to understand what's going on here . Thanks much .

However one faces trials isn't a sign of ones faith. You could use Job's wife as an example of someone who going through trials lacked faith and said curse God and die and yet still be saved versus someone like Job who said even though he slay me yet will I trust in him. I think she was saved because Job responded that she speaks AS a foolish person would, and told her should we receive good and not evil also, and in all this Job did not sin with his lips, meaning that his wife sinned with her lips only. And she ended up having 10 more kids. 2:10 KJV - But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

John 3:16-17; 5:24; 6:29, 40, 20:29-31… I’ll take Jesus at His word and leave MacArthur, Washer, White, etc to their own devices… There upsetting part is there willingness to condemn and call into question the salvation of those who disagree with them… Very threatening to weaker believers…

The gospel call to faith presupposes that sinners must repent of their sin and yield to Christ’s authority.” In other words, a sinner who refuses to repent is not saved, for he cannot cling to his sin and the Savior at the same time. And a sinner who rejects Christ’s authority in his life does not have saving faith, for true faith encompasses a surrender to God. Thus the gospel requires more than making an intellectual decision or mouthing a prayer; the gospel message is a call to discipleship. The sheep will follow their Shepherd in submissive obedience. Jesus’ repeated warnings to the religious hypocrites of His day as proof that simply agreeing to spiritual facts does not save a person. There must be a heart change. Jesus emphasized the high cost of discipleship: “Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27), and “Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples” (verse 33). In the same passage, Jesus speaks of counting the cost; elsewhere, He stresses total commitment: “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says that eternal life is a narrow path found by “only a few” (Matthew 7:14); in contrast, some seek to broaden the path so that anyone who has a profession of faith can enter. Jesus says that “every good tree bears good fruit” (verse 17); in contrast, some say that a tree can still be good and bear nothing but bad fruit. Jesus says that many who say “Lord, Lord” will not enter the kingdom (verses 21-23); in contrast, some teach that saying “Lord, Lord” is good enough. Paul and James taught that a true profession of faith will be backed up by evidence of faith. If a person is truly following the Lord, then they will obey the Lord’s instructions. A person who is living in willful, unrepentant sin has obviously not chosen to follow Christ, because Christ calls us out of sin and into righteousness. Indeed, the Bible clearly teaches that faith in Christ will result in a changed life 2 Corinthians 5:15,17 Galatians 5:22-23 James 2:14-26

@alvinfen4511 Repent means change your mind. What is the one thing that God wants you to change minds about? The only thing that will keep you eternally separated from God. SIN. Jesus's mission was to call on a fallen sinfulled man to come to repentance.

@jonahamir Exactly. I don't agree with everything MacArthur teaches, but he is not a false teacher.

@2Chronicles714_ no, the one thing we need to change our mind about is JESUS. to believe in Jesus is to repent of dead works.

@michaelk1023 Unbelief is not the only sin. What's so difficult to acknowledge we must repent of sin since the crux of the entire Bible is that God is calling on a sinfulled man to change his mind and turn away from sin and turn to Him?

@@John5.24 In a recent poll 70% of Americans say they believe in Jesus. You're saying that's repentance and they will inherit the kingdom of God?

He has a shoe untied!! That is a terrible SIN at Bob Jones where John graduated…. He would definitely be given demerits and would need to show he is very SORRY and demonstrate he does have a bad attitude and say the BJ CREED word for word PERFECTLY!!
