Lyrics
I'm so tired, it hurts
So tired I don't know what to call it
Still, I put on my shirt,
Feel around for my wallet
I fumble to the door, and I slowly turn the handle
As I think about whatever it is
That keeps me awake
That's keeping me in motion
As I step out into the abyss
'Cause a new day
Starts in the dark
A new flame sometimes starts
With a broken heart
I remember you
I was on the porch
You were in the front yard
Fumbling the keys
You sat down in the seat
And you started the car
How was I to know it?
You know I couldn't know it
How could I have known it then?
I didn't see it coming
You never see it coming
But I, I never saw you again
But a new day
Starts in the dark
A new flame
Sometimes starts with a broken heart
And I don't know how
I don't know how hard this is gonna get
But if everything is changing
And you and I are changing
Then we're standing in whatever it is
'Cause a new day
Starts in the dark
A new flame sometimes starts
With a broken heart
There's not a light outside your window
It doesn't mean that it's the end, though
So don't give up on me right now
If I've got a fire to burn the night down
'Cause a new day
Starts in the dark
A new flame sometimes starts
With a broken heart
And I don't know how
I don't know how hard this is gonna get
But if everything is changing
And you and I are changing
Then we're standing in whatever it is
'Cause a new day
Starts in the dark
A new flame sometimes starts
With a broken heart
A new day
Starts in the dark
A new flame sometimes starts
With a broken heart

John Mark McMillan is something of an anomaly: an artist and Platinum-selling songwriter bending genres and defying categorization by carving out his own unique and independent path. With an ear for melody and a poet’s eye for metaphor, no topic has been off-limits. While each of his albums over the past decade have continued to explore new territory, it’s McMillan’s ability to give lyric and language to the human experience that many consider his greatest gift.

I don’t know who Steve is but he’s in my prayers now. I’m dedicating this to my husband Bill. Last time I saw him I was on the porch and he got in the car and I never saw him again.

Bro John, thank you for sharing your life in Christ. JOHN 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. You will meet him in heaven. Just wanted to mention it even though you know it.

When I first heard this all that I could hear was some kind of breakup song, but I saw you indicate (I'm sure to the relief and joy of many, not least of which you and your wife) that it was not that. Now I hear so much more, and as I got up early, before the sun, today to start a thing that might become something new, a pivot in life, this had a different meaning altogether. Which is to say, I'm sure you and God will do a lot with this song in a lot of people's lives. I'm so grateful for you and your voice and how you use your gift, John Mark.

Dear John this song was beautiful. I like how the song was longer. I like the fact you paid honor to your friend Steve. My favorite lyric was Don't Give up on me right now. This song reminds me of your older ones which are the ones that I enjoy the best. God Bless

The image you put to the holy Spirit is beautiful a new flame. This rebirth out of sin, we who are dead in sin are alive now in Christ

Todos os dias ouço essas canções, e muitas vezes elas me lembram que tudo isso é passageiro e a algo mais além do mar e da escuridão.

Whatever it is, I don’t know how hard it is going to get…. But the flame is never extinguished, and the darkness only serves to highlight his existence

John, essa música retrata muito do que eu passei. Perdi meu melhor amigo em 2008. Em um dia conversamos e no dia seguinte estava lamentando sua partida. Foi na escuridão do luto que o Senhor alcançou meu coração. Linda canção!

I must say that your songs always bring me into the state of thinking deep about life. And you're always in time. The line "If I've got a fire to burn the night down" caught me and I thought: "Sometimes I wish I had some supernatural powers to change the state of my life right now or change some circumstances. Why doesn't God give me such strength?" But then it comes to me that maybe it is our super power as human beings to keep moving with our natural powers. Maybe God wants us just to be humans. And yeah they tell me about trusting Him and everything but maybe sometimes God wants us to count less or wish on something powerful and grandiose. In moments of loss, sorrow and sadness we feel so small and helpless and that's why we ask for His mighty hand to help. But maybe we should just carry on as human helping and caring for each other. And maybe sometimes to sing songs like this are the best thing to do. A small deed but a great power

So crazy, God is so Good. The journey to Him and with Him molds us. Sometimes I think, I can’t wait to get to heaven, but there is a reason we are here. To love and care and share Christ with all those in our lives. Have a beautiful and blessed day. ❤️

First direct reference to that sentinel event in your life since the last verse of How He Loves on The Song Inside The Sounds Of Breaking Down. I have a Hope Anthology CD in my CD case, been a fan a long time, almost for half of my life, the music just keeps getting better. I have fond memories of the days when I would read your blog on Blogspot. Thank you for sharing your gift and life with us.
