I saw John Martyn in Sheffield in 1971 for the first time and this was his curtain raiser. I have been a big fan ever since. He loved this song. I never saw anybody get off on their own playing as much as him. I was studying closely his fingering ( I was right in front ) but I just came away with a blur! He was laughing and giggling so maybe he was playing with me (us)! Like Danny Thompson said "He could swing like nobody else" and that can't be taught.....even on an old Yamaha FG 50 like he played then. I think he played better sitting down too. Thanks for the insight.

Cheers man. Just the finger pick technique I wanted. And now its opened a whole door to what I'm trying to write. Using non conventional chords, 7th major and minor chords and pentatonic licks up and down the neck. Its a piece ive been working on for ages. But adding this Martyn technique while finger picking and upping the tempo has opened the door to what I want it to sound like. Thanksyou Sir. 👏

Hi Steven......I agree with Jamie Maidment ..... good video, but do it with your left hand from the front or looking up the fretboard so you can see all the finger placements.......having said that, I think you nailed it mate ! Cheers....and keep doing what you do with the strings.... from a player for..... 53 years....... :-)
@greyballsthefirst5 жыл бұрын
Hi guys no offence and I don't mean you, but this is not for a beginner the groove on this is far too advanced and can not be taught it's pure feel , what i'm saying is if you can get into this groove then you are more than equal to the task of working out finger placement great vid though eh G

Brilliant analysis and demo . . . best I have ever seen on youtube, very close to the original. THANKS for spending the time to do this. Could you please clarify exactly what TUNING this is - the comments below only confuse the issue. is it 'Dropped D' ?
@MrStargazer667 жыл бұрын
The video/demo explanation here is played in standard tuning, without any dropped-D. Other people have been commenting on the key John Martyn played his own version of the song in on his recordings...

THANK YOU EVERYONE X, With regards to questions on tuning, This song is played in standard tuning which can be E standard D standard sort of thing. I am truly sorry I made the video quickly on my phone tuning my guitar by ear.. silly I know. What confused me when learning this song was the approach to the D chord which Is played by using your thumb on the f sharp E string 2nd fret, your middle finger on the A 2nd fret g string and the open d string with your other fingers free to riff. Im 99.9 percent sure this is what confuses folk lol and once again I hope this helps!. thanks again for subscribing xx
@johnmckie65632 жыл бұрын
That’s pretty much how he played it …well done. If you have 10 pints and then try it again you will be 100% correct.

This is great! but tell me, I'm no expert and don't read tabs (just play by ear), whats your tuning...drop D? etc?
@stevenoliveroliver49505 жыл бұрын
if its any use to you this late on lol the songs in standard tuning maybe lowered by John but in this case I tuned by ear, wish I didn't now as the lesson had such a big response...if you tune your a string to me playing the main riff then tune the rest of your strings to that one your be in key with me.
@cameronhoward87358 жыл бұрын
What tuning are you playing?
@stevenoliver678 жыл бұрын
Cameron It's standard tuning I tuned by ear so apologies if it's flat/sharp to your guitar. :)

@nickyG75158 жыл бұрын
sorry, this is normal (concert) tuning. But, J Martyn always plays in G with his guitar tuned down?
@oElCapitan8 жыл бұрын
No on the album version he has capo at 3 I think. At least, you can play this way along to the album version with capo at 3. Dunno about live, probably standard tuning though
@nickyG75158 жыл бұрын
Live he plays in G, but his coice deepened, (if it could) to baritone to very low baritone! lol
