John Mayer always gives some extra to his live performances. Love it how he always gives another twist to his songs when he plays them live.

I bar my index finger on the tenth fret then take my pinky off the second string (13th fret) and down to the sixth (13th fret) for the second chord.

love this song - live or album. I got into mayer through his blues in continuum but i realized how good he makes pop sound. He surely raises the bar for pop music as far as musicality goes.

Rare mistake/ wrong note at about the 4:00 mark. I point out it because of how he handled it. He didn’t make a face or a grimace or even acknowledge it. He just kept playing. Amazing musicianship

It's about the different relationships you have in life. Breakups, get togethers, hookups, endings, and beginnings and how it all continually rotates throughout your life. The backbone is repeated in he end, he hopes that the more love he gives the more he receives despite everything else.

@abolocks Thanks for the encouragement, I have been practicing and now I have a three fret stretch of the thumb at mid neck, but I am still working on the 4 fret stretch at the 12th fret, almost there!

I have super small hands, adult sized gloves are always too big for me :( Everybody notices how miniature my girlish hands are, but somehow I still get this just fine, so I wonder whether its more down to have a certain amount of strength and bend in your thumb, rather than having large hands. I use the exact same guitar as he does in the video too, so neck size plays no part.

@kaneoheGrown glad to know that I am not the only one who can't do the 13x101210x (the second chord) the book calls it Fadd2. It is physically impossible for me, and it totally bums me out as this is one of my favorite songs. I have been playing it without the thumb on the 13th fret... but it is such a light bass song that you can notice... Can anyone give me some pointers for an alternative way to play this?
@TobyEllisSongwriter12 жыл бұрын
the wrong note is an Ab, or the b3 of the scale. the reason it sounds so jarring is that we are in Fmajor, so the bear mi3 against the maj3 is quite the clash. That clash is actually what makes the blues the blues sound, but thats because of its phrasing. Unintended note, definatley. Thinking about music in terms of worng/right in counter-productive. Unintended most certainly.

@callyjohnwell The music isn't really what I'd call "pop" though. It has catchy melodies like pop but pop is forever changing. The Black Eyed Peas are classed as "pop" and so is Lady Gaga. They're nothing like Mayer. I think Mayer creates an absolutely astonishing coalition of pop, rock, blues and jazz which is why he's one of my favourite musicians on the planet. You can't call him any straight genre, really.

@callyjohnwell Yeah you got on the best path in discovering Mayers music. He's a gifted blues musician but he opted to stop "introducing" blues to the mainstream. That's a shame in my opinion, he was very inovating in doing it. And this last album he wanted to change his style so badly that it lost all the depth except for Edge of Desire. Continuum is still is masterpiece, but Covered in Rain, Why Georgia, Wheel, Clarity, Man on the side.. What a great artist. My favourite at least.

What do you consider pop about this song? I'd call this some sort of subgenre of soul.
