Just a great man raised by great parents who reached levels of greatness that most players never even get close to. I know it's not a exact science but I always feel better with sports players who's parents refused to let McEnroe settle for second best in everything, even tiddlywinks. And I once had a few beers with him backstage at an oasis gig and a few Mary Jane cigarettes. He'd been retired so long by then and I just thought it's so cool he had the will to say no to drugs during his career but once he retired he started living his life his way. One of the goat

I used to get up as a little kid in New Zealand at 1am with my Dad and watch the McEnroe v Borg matches at Wimbledon. It was just fantastic. I was more a Borg fan back then wanting him to beat the loudmouth Yank, but man do I appreciate what a legend Mac turned out to be , and I love the guy and what he did for Tennis and for sport really, and his commentary these days at big matches is spot on.

Interesting that John McEnroe hypocritically refers to the performance-enhancing drugs taken by modern athletes. I remember reading somewhere on the internet when (I believe it was in 2012) he admitted that the last 6 years of his pro tennis career, he was taking horse steroid! Even though at the time of his admission, he stated that he didn't know what the trainer(s) were putting in him, the claim that he didn't know is simply not believable. Does he really expect people to believe that for 6 years in a row he didn't know what trainers or doctors were putting in his body? Most, if not all, pro athletes undoubtedly know, even if they deny it, what trainers or doctors are putting in their bodies!

This was fantastic. John at fifty-ten years old. A beautiful person. When Patty spoke of how John recieved his mother-in-law in his home with tears in her eyes, that really got to me. That really shows the character and goodness of the man. I had already seen evidence of that when, at his induction at the Tennis Hall of Fame, he dedicated it to Patty's daughter, John's stepdaughter. That's class. And when Tatum O'Neal's brother testified in favor of John for custody of their children, knowing his sister was not in a good place and needed to focus on getting better. When your brother-in-law supports you, that's a seal of approval. He may have been an uncontrolled brat on court when he was young, but his soul is beautiful. We are so proud of you Johnny Mac. Shame about the '84 French Open, though (when you see an open wound, you must add a pinch of salt and a dash of lemon juice to properly season it).

Hello from a Dane living in Norway. I'm 55 yrs old, and remember John McEnroe tennis matches back then. I remember his rage and that I lost the lust to watch tennis altogether. I was definitely shocked over his behavior just because he lost a point or whatever. Rage, of course, is the key-word here. Rage, in my opinion, is a genetic trait = its a behavioral characteristic that is ingrained within your personality. I play table tennis and like tennis, it's definitely a hard sport. I really HATE to lose and I do play with greater passion, emotion and focus than my playmates, thats for sure. When I lose or dont play as I want, my immediate reaction is that I get highly disappointed and sad a little too long = 10 seconds. But I never get rage and never express rage towards other people. Rage is a whole other realm than getting disappointed or sad. I would definitely be afraid of Mr. McEnroe were I his girlfriend or even just his friend, in that he's definitely "potential" (as we call it in my work-profession), to loss of control, impulsive rage and lashing out, meaning I would consider him as potential dangerous. I would definitely never challenge him in any discussion = I would prefer not do disagree with him in any sensitive matters. I remember that it amazed me that he was allowed to continue in the sport of tennis and not banned for life due to his repetetive rage behavior. How is that possible?

McEnroe was the reason I took up playing tennis myself (at age 24....) and the love for the game and the man has never left me. It was the Wimbledon final he lost, the first time I saw this unique young man, who intrigued me so much. He was (and still is) "rock 'n roll" and perhaps that was a huge factor as well as his creativity on the court.. in those years I worked in the music industry so somehow Mac was my perfect fit perhaps.

The chalk flying up, for example. Obviously on the line. So many of these calls he was getting hosed on and he wouldn’t stand for it , and I don’t blame him Plus, we New Yorkers are very passionate when we talk. Not to tell my age or anything...but I remember when Johnny Mac came on the scene at Wimbledon and how appalled the Brits all were. I thought the Brits all had stickup their asses and that McEnroe was hilarious. The "chalk flew" thing is still one of my all-time favorite rants in sports. Unlike some people I was never turned off by his behavior because unlike Nastase and Connors - he was never crude or lewd about it. He just thought he was right all the time. That kind of ego and hubris is why his tennis was so sublime. Until Roger Federer came along McEnroe was easily the most talented player in the history of tennis. Not the best - but the most talented. The fact that he's a lot deeper than people ever would have thought is to his credit - because he certainly hid it well from the public.

Mac made the game of tennis more fun to watch. I love tennis, and yes, the purity of the game IS entertaining on its own, but when he took the court, he brought something extra to the game. The guys today are INCREDIBLE, and I respect the best very much, but you can take your Novak vs Nadal, and ill take John vs Jimmy ALL day. Those matches were just more interesting to me, idk.

John McEnroe is like Charles Barkley: both extremely gifted at their sports, but their personalities were even bigger.

You call that singing? You can't be serious?! Stick to tennis and guitar jamming. Love the guy! Still my favourite tennis player of all time. He invented his own McEnroesque shots. Brilliant feel at the net. No one with better feel not even now in 2021.

I hated Mac during his outbursts in the 70’s and 80’s. Now I kind of miss court dramatics like his. I judge Mac based on what he gives back. He is an asset to the local community and a great ambassador for tennis.
