Sooo... this morning I received this squallid comment and I can't even reply as the "author" may have erased the post in hit & run style; I can't find it here. This is the mentality we have to face these days: Victor Niquel "If you actually have a brain to understand, you understand that the abomination that is jazz fusion speaks only to the worst parts of the psyche Cerebral agitation and drivel, meaningless harmonies and melodies that are unsingable unless you're the pervert that created them, or a poor sideman having to learn them There's brain allright in this aesthetic deadend, but zero soul nor heart. Of course, jazz fusionists can imagine there is, but the only thing this genre provides, is cerebral agitation Funny how jazz went from dance music for working class black people, to masturbatory solos for seated white art critics" What a BRAIN!

I met John backstage at the Tower Theater in Pa. during the mid-eighties. Mind you, I was completely starstruck at the notion of sharing the same space with the likes of he, Paco and Al DiMeola. John was speaking with someone else and had his back turned to me. When he finished that conversation, he turned to me and I mentioned to him that I was in the midst of studying the very same harmonic course he had. Suddenly, John's eyes lit up! He sat me down and proceeded to give me an hour long tutorial on Jazz harmony. To be honest, it felt as though I was having a conversation with God. Amazing and seeming to be wholly lacking an intrusive ego. John McLaughlin will always be a personal hero of mine

He plays keyboards and DRUMS at the highest level by any multi instrument virtuoso ever. On drums AND keyboards, he was with Allan Holdsworth, Billy Cobham, Robin Trower, Jack Bruce, Level 42, etc, etc. He's been with John Mclaughlin since 2005 on keyboards.....but oh man can he rip up the drums. Amazing talent and it's no surprise one of the greatest guitarists ever recruited him. Love JM and listen to his music all the time. I used to be a violinist in several bands, and have attempted and failed to rip off his licks many times over the years! Embarrassingly enough, i was asked once to jam on Violin at a party in LA back when i liverd there in 79, and was doing my usual attempts (as above) and realised when i had finished, that the guy who came over to me to say "Nice playing" was actually Jerry Goodman. They all are. Never was a big fan of this jazz/fusion thing but this cut knocked me out. So much life and energy in every note. Not a weak moment When I see or hear someone playing this good, I get this weird feeling of wanting to throw all my instruments out the window. I envy these and other superior musicians. They are 20 levels or more above all the rest. Great stuff

You should look into his work when he was playing with Ultramarine :)

Me and my friend Mitch from Belmont, California.. teenagers and musicians around 1974...huge Mahavishnu fans. We went to see the MO many times in the Bay Area......Winterland, San Jose Civic, etc etc. Always had them spinning on the turntable with our minds blown and joyful. So blessed to be around there at that time. Miss you Mitch !
