One of the best guitar players of all time. The knowledge that man has of music and playing is second to none.

I’d like to see those criticising John’s tone revolutionize music and create new genres while mastering jazz, flamenco and Indian classical music like he has 🙄

I saw JM in London after his 70 birthday - one of the best shows of his I have ever been to - jhankri is right he keeps getting better - and he has always been brilliant, in my opinion

Beautiful being, Maestro John. As a creator and in person as I had the great privilege to spend a few moments with him after one of his 4th Dimension concerts up in Humboldt California. By the looks of this situation, the fact he's trying to warm his hands up at every opportunity, it looks like it was pretty chilly to finger the fret board. Regardless, if I'm ever so lucky to reach the age of 70+, I hope my fingers still move half that speed and precision.

For anyone interested, John uses a Zendrive II with tube these days, previously was using the Seymour Duncan classic tube overdrive. Apparently he likes lots of dirt- I'm cool with that.

While the guitar sound here is pretty terrible, those commenting on this man's talent in a negative way betray a profound ignorance. Just do a simple youtube search with his name and be prepared to get schooled.

If anyone here is interested in anything other than debating Johnny Mac's tone, the name of the tune he's playing is 'Little Miss Valley'.
@jerryoutlaw33967 жыл бұрын
I love him so much. I can only assume the unusual guitar tone here was a result of him playing through whatever was provided and making the best of it. Wonderful playing but in the context of a duet with a grand piano in a big reverby cathedral type room, it is unfortunate that he had to use that particular tone. It was surprisingly, even slightly unpleasantly fuzzy. Still he can make the best of any situation and mostly transcend a tone that is "less than delightful" with beautiful playing.

No, this has been his standard live tone for about 25 years.

not really. To be truthfull, musicians dont get better the older they become. Physical limitations especially for instrumentalist like guitar players. Then there is ambition which is but burn up . They have done it all. The juices just dont rush around any more. So stop your POLYANA exageration.

I see people commenting on not-too-nice guitar tone here, but I bet it sounded better through the PA. This was probably recorded direct from the mixer, that must be why it sounds so harsh.

Yep, I agree Andy. Angus uses the clean channel , considering the sale of overdrive pedals worldwide, quite ironic really.

If there is a bad tone, John McLaughlin will find it. If I were PRS, I'd sue! (Sorry Johnny, but that is some seriously nasty square-wave gnarliness.)

Well, the guitar was made specifically for the museum and specifically with John in mind. Don't know what amp he's playing through....The guitar is now in the Met collection.

He seems to use chorus effect as a distinguishing features because all his videos have it. But otherwise this man is such a joy to look at in his element that I have decided to learn from him.

There's a lot of comments about the tone, but what about the room? I had to play in a gym once. It was a six sided concrete box and the whole band sounded absolutely terrible. I saw Phish play in a similar situation, they sounded awful. John's situation doesn't look any better.
@barbarakud97787 жыл бұрын
IMHO it's very difficult to estimate the real sound and quality of any guitar if ovedrive is being used. Then we should have full collections of different models to compare them on the same amp and fuzz/booster. The better way is to estimate sound of electric guitar without overdrives, additionallyusing different pickups position switch, etc. Now, after watching/listrening the footage we can only say that the guitar plays and John as always, still plays like great virtuoso.

I've heard better tones for sure, but for an old guy like this, his alternate picking and phrasing is STILL the bomb-'nuff said. Gary Husband, wow what a great pianist...

People criticise. He isnt set up for a gig and its a casual jam and the guy is getting on on age too. They should hear him play with shakti and the mahavishnu orchestra. He is no doubt a true great on guitar and even hendrix in a jam situation didnt always sound amazing.arent some peoe petty and they dont understand cos often they dont play music themselves so cant understand ad libbing to a loose jam like blues at home in the sitting room.

For those who have been following him for decades, we know John doesnt need to prove anything. So I guess he just intended to play in that way for whatever reason at that moment. That is John McLaughlin, he plays what he likes.

Gonna comment on the tone because it's still a free country. It sucks ass. I love John. Easily one of the finest guitarists ever if not the finest. He needs an intervention. People say if it's good enough for John then fine. Well it's detracting from his obvious genius. If Zappa didn't tell Vai how bad his tone was who knows what would have happened. JM needs an intervention in my completely personal opinion. Not people kissing his ass. If anyone else sounded like the shit he sounds like now you all would fry the guy. Done. John...get a real modeler at least or a great tube amp at best.
@mcmanustony7 жыл бұрын
This was a one off performance on a guitar made specially for the museum. PRS made an acoustic and an electric for the Met and John played the electric. it wasn't his usual set up.....hence the tone. I think there was also no soundcheck for him- or not much of one. It was a demonstration rather than a concert.

CantDoThatOnStage I was at the same show and heard no problem with the tone. This is his modern tone that he uses and it sounds great with the 4th Dimension.

JM is a hero of mine, but that does not make him flawless in all things guitar. IMO, His approach to "funky" or "bluesy" had always been his least strong suite . BUT that's kind of liked saying Franz Liszt did not excel in playing folk music!

I'm so sorry to see this... He's one of my heroes and will always be. But his performance... sucks. Lately he was close to my town and I really wanted to see him. But I then decided not to go, because I was afraid he would disappoint me and I would eventually hate him forever... This way he could stay great. I mean, his sound is one thing. But he's getting sloppier and sloppier. Perhaps it's him losing physical control over his fingers as he's getting old (Clapton said this is slowly happening to him, he's about the same age). But hearing this I would otherwise wonder if he even plays guitar between the shows. Sorry for this.
