Gary Husband revealed in a recent interview that when you see John pull his hand off the fretboard it’s because he doesn’t want to fall into muscle memory or repeat a phrase he’s played before. It’s to keep his improvisations pure…

This is better than any other "Orchestra" McLaughlin previously formed. I do remember when the album came out, after the critics did not give the most stellar reviews to the previous "acoustic in an electric band" albums. I was somewhat amazed that the reception to this album was rather positive. I, however, have largely not known it's content. I've only just sampled this from time to time. Now, going through this in its entirety, I find this to be rather exceptional! This is not typical contemporary jazz, which is what McLaughlin is understood to be going after. This is that and more!

Thoroughly enjoyed this concert !!! McGlaughlin was at his finest in the '80s. And Bill Evans was a big part of that. Hard to believe this was 32 years ago! NOSTALGIA so moving. Yet I prefer the recording with the synthesized guitar (though he plays a splendid acoustic),sans the improvisation. On the other hand, The Wall will Fall was great even with the improv. Josey just delightful. The Wait blew me away! Wow! More intense than the recording, if that's possible. Apparently so. Great show!

How tastes differ! I didn't like the 80's production aesthetic that shaped this material at all, or the commercialism inherent in the tunes, i didnt dig it then, or hearing it now, (but then I disliked Miles' stuff made during the same era). Give me anything John did before, and after, this period and i'm happy. "Extrapolation", the "Lifetime" L.P's, "Bitches Brew",Carla Bley's "Escalator over the hill","Birds of Fire", "Apocalypse", the "Live" album, "Visions of the Emerald beyond", even "Inner Worlds",all the "Shakti" and "One Truth Band", the "Trio" stuff with Gurtu, the "4rth Dimension", anything but this! Thanks for sharing! I saw Mahavishnu at Newport in '85 and it was awesome ... we were right in the front, and as a (hack) bassist I was already in awe of Jonas Hellborg and he was absolutely on fire that day! And while I love Danny Gottlieb, he is not the powerhouse of Cobham (who played on the Mahavishnu album). And it is funny looking at Jim Beard's setup - a DX7 (of course) but also an Ensoniq Mirage - which was essentially a budget 8-bit sampler even in '86, which is around when I bought it myself.

I went to see a performance at a local music school a year ago and the keyboard player (I'm guessing faculty, lol) had a DX7 and was using the sounds! I've often pondered the ago old question who is the 'best' guitarist of all time. I think I can safely say now that it has to be John McLaughlin. By a mile.

@@ssurjohannesen9653 Beck's on record as saying that McLaughlin's the best guitarist ever, Shane Lane can be found on youtube saying he's the ultimate master of flat picking and Jimmy Page reckons that JML was, in the mid sixties, already "by far the best guitarist in England [while he worked in a record shop and gave lessons to Page]." Blackmore's mentor, Big Jim Sullivan, who Ritchie himself considers a better guitarist than Ritchie, reckons that, while the main British session guitarists in England in the 60s (ie him, Page, Vic Flick and John) were all world class, McLaughlin was, and is, in a different league to the others. Page and Beck would piss themselves laughing if you told them they were much better than McLaughlin.

I remember Chick Corea (and Jeff Beck) calls John McLaughlin the best guitarist, maybe they are musically advanced and close enough to recognize that. In any case, John is and will always be one of the greatest guitarists in the history.

John McLaughlin is untouchable when he plays acoustic guitar. It sounds strange to say that the passion, grace and fire displayed on his acoustic playing surpassed his early Mahavishnu years, the difference is just the guitar tone. I remember John said he did not need a Marshall amp (i.e. sheer volume and distortion) anymore to express the fire, all he needed were pure musical notes.

Pretty uncompromising show. Makes me wonder if this was a band that could have been better captured in concert than on record. They did two albums, both studio, both short. Tunes seem to be as follow: It's Up To You (Beard), The Juice Is Loose (Evans), Nostalgia (McLaughlin) 17:50, The Wall Must Fall (McLaughlin), 32:50, Jozy (McLaughlin), 45:30; The Wait (Beard), 54:10; It's The Pits (Hellborg bass solo), 1:04:50; The Dance of Maya (McLaughlin), 1:14:00; Pacific Express (McLaughlin), 1:14:55, including Gottlieb drum solo at 1:22:19; The Life Divine (Coltrane), 1:26:30. An encore starts at 1:29:25 but it's incomplete. Great version of Nostalgia.
