This album changed my life. I was a stone cold rocker and then I heard this and was blown away. My approach to music took a left turn. My ears finally opened and I really began to listen.

I saw Shakti on Oct. 30, 1977 (just checked my ticket stub). They opened with this song and it was very special as the version on the lp "Handful of Beauty" did not feature a guitar solo. L.Shankar played his solo on this tune wit such fury that the hairs of his violin bow were flying all over the place...now that's what I call shredding!

His statement of the melody at the beginning is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.

Thank you brother or sister for uploading these - watching in January 2020 listening to winter dawn chorus at 7 in morning, bit of snow flecking gently and briefly- tears down cheeks - dancing at the feet of my lord indeed - all is bliss , all is bliss . Simples. Love and peace from Wales 🏴

Like it? Love it! We loved it when it was just vinyl, but to see the master and his friends is wonderful. I'm glad Shakti has shaped world-music in many ways. It's broadened the pallet. This is more than hippie music - it has content.

GUITAR INFO. Guitar shown is one of 2 made drone string guitars built by Abraham Wechter ,then consulting luthier for Gibson. The 1st prototype was non cutaway . This cutaway was delivered to John in mid-1976 . The sring guage for the 6 strings were at first 038 - 009 , later he used 042- 010 . The 7 drone strings were 062 = 023 . 3 tranducers used , one under each bridge. Guitar destroyed when McLaughlin lent it to careless friend.

Brilliant musical synergy from, arguably, the greatest band ever to have graced a stage: John McLaughlin - cross-string, scalloped-fretboard guitar L Shankar - 5-string Carnatic violin Zakir Hussein - tabla Vikku Vinayakram - ghatam

It's known as a drone acoustic.Along with the shortened "DRONE" strings that run through the sound hole, it has a scalloped fretboard which is essentially like playing a fretless!!!!One of a kind.

Fucking incredible! What-the-hell kind of guitar is Mclaughlin playing? I've never seen or heard anything like it! It looks like a guitar but SOUNDS like a sitar! Wow, he is fast, and the percussionists are amazing! I've always liked and wanted to learn how to play tabla...I think my technique would be perfect for that instrument. I definitely need to explore this band and Mahavishnu Orchestra, more! Awesome stuff!
