The Synclavier was MIDI heaven in 1984 - but listening back, I must say that the sound of the amplified electric guitar has stood the test of time better. However, listening to John is always an amazing experience.

yep, those synth sounds a bit stupid
@santibanks4 жыл бұрын
I think the Synclavier still sounds great as an instrument today. However, I think McLaughlin had a very poor choice of sounds. Pat Metheny also used it (with the same guitar, he only had the control panel built in) and it works and sounds so much better within his context as I think Metheny simply understood the Synclavier and what it was and McLaughlin giving me the impression that he never got it and just kind of hopped on the technology bandwagon because it was hip or fancy at that time.

Thankfully the drummer wasn't playing a Simmonds kit! I doubt this sounded futuristic at the time but yes everything from the 80s was dated by about 1988... the only time this stuff from the 80s is revisited is when someone is being ironic. But most of the best music of the past 40 years has been using instruments and gear which was all available in the 60s!

this may well date just before the formation of another "mahavishnu" band that cobham recorded with but decided not to tour with, maybe because he was about to do a record and tour again himself, after a few years off. this type of sound: synth, bass, drum, is the sound Cobham went for on the albums he did c.1985, some highlights of which I remember hearing on a nice-price compilation album (covering 1985-1999) called "many years B.C." can i remember a tune title? "Mozaik", "Dancer", I think. his brief hooking up with McLaughlin again was perhaps because McL was in France throughout the 80s and Cobham had, I think, just moved to Switzerland. anyway, the thing this trio is playing on this video is "are you the one?", which for some reason I thought was a spontaneous jam (on a track on McLaughlin's Electric Guitarist album, feat. Jack Bruce & Tony Williams), rather than a set tune. it sounds almost nice here, while the original is raw, dirty, aggressive etc. that's a difference between a lot of 80s and 70s electric band music recordings.

Cool to break a bass string during tv recording! Jonas didn't seem too bothered!He was very much ahead of time as a bass player in those years!
@TruthSurge4 жыл бұрын
wow, Jonas broke that string early and then Billy lost a stick near the end but if you didn't know those things happen by seeing it, you'd never know. Yeah, Jonas was slightly miffed and lost a bit of his solo but it was still nice. That tracking just couldn't really keep up with McLaughlin. He is just too fast for that stuff and I think he prob slowed down just due to that fact.

Synth guitar. All the rage, back then. Playing horn lines on the guitar. Technically, killer. Tonally... ehhhh. I'd rather hear him play his double-neck, or even a hollow-body Gibson jazz box.

I saw John (with Jonas) on his 1984 Mahavishnu tour. He played that Roland synth guitar for most the show. It was intriguing, but I really wanted to see him play more of his Gibson, which he only did for one or two songs. Still, it was one of my first non-rock concerts and I was mesmerized throughout.

I see Cobham also loses a stick during this jam session too! Hahaha, no-one missed a beat. I saw JM on his MAHAVISHNU album tour in London around this time and was deeply disappointed that Cobham had been replaced by Danny Gottlieb. @darrylguerrant51014 жыл бұрын
The song was originally recorded in 1977, from the album 'Electric Guitarist, John McLaughlin'. I think that's the title, it may be the other way around. A re-union of musicians in this genre of Jazz for the last 9 years, some old friends he had worked with and new people who were to continue with him after that album. Only one of them he already worked with in the early 60s. Can you guess who?
