Yes, we did.... I feel bad for the kids today because they'll have nothing like this to consider "their own" from growing up and being young. As much as I'm happy when I see half of the concert venue filled with young people under 30 when I watch the Boss, Cougar, U2, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Madona, Guns N' Roses, Billy Idol, Nine Inch Nails, or the immortal Stones, I am also sad thinking how in 30 years there will be no legendary artists like this left alive for the new generations to see. This is the last train that keeps getting smaller and smaller every day. As of 2024, oficially more than half od the artists I have in my record collection/Ipod playing lists are dead! I'll never be able to see David Bowie, Prince, George Michael, Tom Petty and many others live in concert again. And neither will anyone else. So let's enjoy while it still lasts and lets appreciate what we have left. Please go to every possible concert you can because very soon that artist will no longer be there and unfortunately nothing of substance is coming to replace them.

I’m 51 and about 3 years ago me and some other guys around my age started a cover band and we play at bars and parties. We get a good response playing these old junkers and we bring it to younger and younger crowds it seems like every time we play. I sing “Pink Houses” and it never fails. Moral to my ramblings, it’s as good as we make it and it’s never too late, get out realize how good you’ve got it right now because you’re still here, you’re not gone yet!! Oh my goodness! Bruce joining John Mellencamp for one of the best songs I've ever heard. I love the irony of Bruce (Born In The USA) and John with Pink Houses, 2 songs politicians wanted to use for campaigns in the 80's, they were just too stupid to understand the irony in each of the songs. Damn that was wonderful, makes me wish I was in Jersey, but Bruce will be here in San Diego very soon. Love to you both, 2 epic songwriters! 🤟 #wearenotworthy
@johnconway98828 ай бұрын
Not so fast, Mr. OMG. That's a tired old narrative that's pretty disingenuous. The campaign staffs knew exactly what the songs were attempting to convey. They simply (and successfully) appropriated the music for a different view of America. The audience knew this as well. In fact, most of the concert-going public who stood in line for Springsteen and Mellencamp tickets then went and stood in line at the polls and voted for Ronald Reagan. Moreover, I saw a David Bowie interview from 1999 where he's excited about the interactive possibilities of the new cyberworld unfolding, and he cites the artist Marcel Duchamp: "The piece of art is not finished until the audience comes and adds their own interpretation."
@northsa74988 ай бұрын
@@johnconway9882 not so fast Mr John.
@objimbo8 ай бұрын
@@johnconway9882 I appreciate the response and the thought that went into it. I agree, people knew better, but the campaign didn't. That's what makes it humorous. Just because it happened 40 years ago doesn't now relegate it to "a tired old narrative." And it's a separate issue whether fans of the songs voted for Reagan or not. Of course many did. Love the Bowie quote though.

I was 14 working at Sky Blue Studio in Sonoma California. John came through he was driving an old Chevy pickup truck with Indiana plates. His equipment was wrapped in old carpets and packing mats. We were helping him load out. John said he was getting no promotion as John Mellencamp and was thinking of changing his name to Cougar. Chris Hackney told him to do what ever he thought he needed to do to help his career. Bruce Springsteen showed up later-fall 1974. Neither one of them had a hit. Mellencamp is nicer to be around. They both became somebody.
