Hi all. I know this video is long. I decided to make it into one long video because that's what felt right to me. Don't forget you can watch faster. If you click into the settings icon on the video, you can change playback speed. I like to watch videos at 1.25x speed. But 1.5x is also not a bad option! Hope you enjoy this video. We had a great time on this trip.

I loved this! At 74 with 2 hip replacements I no longer backpack although I still get out for hikes and take lots of van camping trips. I live in Washington State now but grew up hiking and backpacking in the Sierras when I lived in California. My dad and brother hiked the JMT but I had children to raise and could not go but earlier trips had taken me to Thousand Island and Garnet Lakes and I did Mt. Whitney as a day hike from the other side after my children were grown. Lots of Yosemite trips and hikes and even a snowshoe trip in Winter. (I have bear stories too). Anyway thank you for these beautiful videos. Just the right amount of "story", just the right length, and awesome photography.

Great Video! I appreciate your adding location information throughout as it helps me place what I am seeing in the video with what I recall from my hike from Tuolumne Meadows to the exit over Kearsarge Pass a year ago in September. When I am finally able to finish the southern part of the JMT I will make a point of camping at that lake just north of Forester Pass per the recommendations from both of you. I had plans to finish that part in 2020 but the virus changed my plans; at 72, I thought I it wise to wait a while. I also found it hard to eat as much as I should and ended up losing more than a few pounds (a good thing). The one time I was actually famished was just at that Rock Monster's lair where I lounged and stuffed myself while sitting amongst the Rock Monster's half-formed brethren which were just to its left if you recall. And how brave of you to swim in that cold cold water! I longed to do that at Thousand Islands Lake and even more so at beautiful Rae Lakes but the water was just freezing cold even in September; a good long soak at the hot springs near MTR was a real treat however. It was a wonderful hike, my longest so far. I especially remember the people I encountered every day; funny with all the incredible views, it still is the people you remember most vividly. Happy Trails, I hope to meet you hiking one day!

I get a little sad every time I see the new suspension bridge over Woods Creek. The old bridge with individual wood slats - some broken - had a fond place in my heart. It’s a bit of a nuisance coming and going from each trailhead, but I don’t want to take 20-ish days off work. For the rest of the summer I’ll be popping up to that area for three-day trips. I am a new subscriber and love your Videos! I loved this video of your hike of the John Muir trail. I have watched many thru hikes of the PCT and all of the passes were in snow, so interesting to see the contrast of the area in summer. I have been watching several of your videos each night and am working my way through your entire series. You and Carson are such a great couple!

That smoke was so bad, my girlfriend and I drove east from Portland for EIGHT HOURS before it cleared up in Utah. We drove through all of Oregon and Idaho before seeing clear skies. Glad y'all were safe and didn't run into any fires directly.

UGH!! Yeah. We got lucky that we got out when we did. If our trip was planned a week later, we would have been screwed.

Nice video! I was nobo from Cottonwood Pass solo 10 days after you. Only had rain/thunder on Day 1 and then not a drop for the rest of the trip. Smoke was not bad until Day 13 hiking into Reds Meadow through heavy smoke. Ended up leaving the trail the next morning - have to come back next year to finish it!
@AmyRoutt4 жыл бұрын
I was just right ahead of ya! Sorry that the smoke had you racing out of there. We got lucky and just barely missed the start of the worst of it. I hope you are able to get out there next year and see the rest!

@@AmyRoutt I felt lucky to hit Reds when I did. I know people a few days behind me that were cut off from VVR (and their resupply) - they had a 2-day hike just to exit the trail to the east. Oh - I didn't see a single bear along the way - I am bummed about that.

I knew you were using ULA backpacks, your description told me which model, the Circuit. I recognized the Sawyer Squeeze & the CNOC 2L water containers. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your real-life outdoor adventure from beginning to end. I was wondering what you used for an air mattress, again, your description told MEeee. No Trekking poles? MEeee neither, I don't like to carry things in my hands when hiking. I do wear a thin pair of leather gloves to protect the palm of my hands when I trip & fall. I'm surprised neither of you wore any gloves for hand/palm protection. THANK YOU for taking your time, effort, & equipment to share your adventure with lil ole MEeee. I look forward to the next adventure that you share here on youtube. Warm Regards, from Reno, Nevada.

Yay! I've been waiting for this! Thanks for the shout out - I'm glad you were able to use the Expedition - that thing is a beast, but so much lighter than other options. It makes a great seat too! Funny - I have the exact same view/video @33:43 - that lone tree up on the mountainside reminded me of a chicken. I'm bummed you had so much wind at Lake Helen - that had to be some of the clearest water I've ever seen in a lake. And it tasted so good too! I totally agree with you about Evolution Basin. It was the most epic of all the areas I have been to (so far). We camped near the spot you showed on your video @37:28 on the south-east side of the Evolution Lake. The pikas were plentiful in the area and made a ton of noise while we camped there. It was very cool. You and Carson did an amazing job documenting your journey - thanks for taking us along!

Great video. Your packs seemed really light from Cottonwood. What was the weight of your food and bear canister? How many days of food did you have before the first resupply? Nicely done. 😊
@AmyRoutt Жыл бұрын
Thank you! honestly at this point I don't remember the weight of food initially. I believe we carried 9 days of food, since our first resupply stop was MTR. We ended up with a lot extra since our hunger didn't really kick in until day 9 or 10. It didn't all fit in our bear cans for the first couple nights, so we utilized bear boxes that were available. Some of the big help to saving so much weight was sharing a lot of it with a partner. 1 stove, 1 tent, 1 water filter, double quilt, etc. Throwing down the money for some lightweight gear also helps! haha If you are currently planning your trip, or hoping to do it soon -- I hope you have the most amazing time!

Amy thank you so much for your video! I truly have enjoyed watching and learning from your video as I prepare for my JMT through hike! Your one of the only ones that I have seen not using Trekking Poles on this hike. Out of all the years I have hiked, I have never used them. I’m not sure if you ever use poles, but I was wondering if you felt comfortable through this hike not using them?
@AmyRoutt2 жыл бұрын
Lisa, I appreciate that SO MUCH! Thank you! I'm so excited for you. You're going to have such a great time. As far as poles go, I have used them in the past. And honestly, I just hate carrying/using them haha I've tried multiple times to get into them, and I just don't enjoy carrying them or find them essential. I don't really have any balance issues and my pack is pretty darn light! There is a possibility they could help with fatigue on steep uphill and downhill. But I don't really think they make or break a trip for me. I suppose it all comes down to personal preference! I get a lot of questions and comments about not using poles. But the reality is that it doesn't prevent me from getting out there and having fun, even on higher mileage days! If you don't want to use them, you'll likely be just fine! But at the same time, if you feel really interested in bringing some or trying them out, I say go for it!

Incredible scenery!! And the pit toilet near the start had me chuckling quite a bit, as that's what most backcountry toilets are like up here, but they're usually a green plastic barrel looking thing. (we call them green thrones) And 100% truth on struggling to get the ring on with swollen fingers! I proposed to Lindsay on a summit in Jasper, and the ring barely got on her finger. Great video Amy, this is a bucket list trip!

Hey Amy question regarding rain gear. I saw you used a rain jacket and not a poncho over your pack. I too have a ULA Circuit and am between a Frogg Toggs poncho over me and the pack vs just my regular Rain jacket. How did your pack handle the rain?
@AmyRoutt3 жыл бұрын
Good question! Everything inside my pack was bone dry! We hit a fair amount of rain. Only that one day we were caught outside in more intense rain. I'd confidently do the JMT again without a cover for my pack. I wouldn't be so confident if I was backpacking in super humid/rainy conditions though. But water resistant enough for the typical summer storms in the Sierra. I hope that helps!

I really enjoyed this video! What type of camera/power bank did you use for this and how long I'm between charges? 😊
@AmyRoutt2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I'm trying to remember 😅I believe for the first part thru to Red's Meadow we had a 20000 mAh power bank between the two of us and it was more than enough. We just used our phones for filming. At Red's Meadow we switched out the large power bank for a smaller one. I was conservative with my battery and only used my phone for photos and video, while Carson used his phone for video and reading at night.
