When this played in council bars where chibuku was served not only did ppl stand to dance but they sung along! 1979 I remember very well in kabwe zambia. Was privileged to meet John in ndola I think 1980 he was totally in a drunken stupor. There shall never be another song that reached such popularity and if we had a library of congress this song would hv been nominated for such a deserving award.

Hi Busiku, I was working for ZCCM mines in Luanshya, Zambia when I first heard this song in a night club in down town Luanshya. Fell in love with the song straight away. It is a real African master piece. My work mate Harrison Ngoma wrote down the lyrics to me in English. I used to sing the song too. If I am not mistaken, it is sung in Bemba. Am I right? Harrison Ngoma from Luanshya (Roan township), if you see this note brother, please get in touch with me. Marcellus Fernando.

I would have loved to have seen John Mwansa enjoy the fruits of this song which was, literally, a massive hit in Zambia. But he didn't. Others became well off on the back of it. He didn't. A salutary lesson to musicians who don't, or can't, see the business side of their creative output. Seeing John in his declining years on the streets of Lusaka knowing he had recorded one of Zambia's biggest hits was a sad sight indeed. But the song lives on......

Aids was already killing people at this time. Infact many transmissions occurred during this decade when AIDS was not identified yet. Still people was to speak of it as "ukalepa iminwe"or other phrases. Eg uli ne chiwa pamubili (you carry a ghost of the departed husband which in native folk is believed to cause deaths until a woman is cleansed). Ironically this same song is about a "disease" carrier (a named woman) was passing on to others unsuspecting men making them sick and eventually dying.
