John Nyangata - Dr Omollo KÓndigo & Awendo Superstars

Any time we talk about Benga Music, we ought to consider Dr. Omollo KÓndigo or Simply, John Abich Omolo Ondigo. This bigamist both by profession and real-life is a great contributor to this eternally living art called Benga.Dr.KÓndigo is among the trio of the 3 Doctors of music trained and blessed by the Georges Ojijo and Ramogi and endorsed by Kasongo Polo Menyo and Ogutu Panga wuod Okello.
The Trio are; Dr. Ochieng Nelly, Dr.Collela Mazee and Dr. Omollo KÓndigo.
KOndigo always based his career in two bands, Kiwiro Boys Bands of Otondo Ka Jonyo and Awendo Super Stars., and married only two wives!
Even though he had friendship with both Ochieng Nelly and Collela Mazee, he never turned up for their bands. Their only noticeable link is their solo Guitar Skills owing to a common training at the Victoria Jazz in 1975.
During most of the ardent competition in Benga music, Dr.KOndigo took a low profile. This reminded me of one George Weah of AC Milan in 1995.
This top class Liberian Soccer Star was equally as Good as Romario of PSV even though he was much taller, faster and stronger than the former and far better than Roberto Baggio of Inter Milan but he took a low profile in the 1993 and 94 FIFA World Best contest but in 1995 he could no longer lay low, hence scooped both the Golden Boot and the Trophy.
Oh, in 1995 there was this TV anchor by the name Lady Jackeline Kamonya, and I used to like both her voice and face but then, there was this thing about the arrival of internet which was followed by the coming of the mobile phones so I went after the electronic devices of the generation and lost touch with her.
Ok, back to Dr.KÓndigo, when Mwanda Kings band went bankrupt in Mombasa in the early 1990s, he welcomed Omollo Mwanda ( a few months before Mwanda’s death) into the Awendo Super Stars.
Together with Omollo Mwanda, Bonn Agwambo Masira, Ben Oteko, Odongo Owuor KÓluoch, Ous Ja Rabare, Ogwela wuod gi Rosa Jakombato, Owuor Ja Mariwa, Onyango chogo Ja Kamenya, Arum Ja Giribe and Jorim Ogutu. They made some really wonderful songs including Akodhe System, John Guda Otieno, Isanda Nango, and Nyangata John Odero e.t.c among others.
KÓndigo shot to Stardom in the early 2000 after both Nelly and Collela were dead.
Most people remember Dr.KÓndigo for the song “Selly Nyaimbo” which he did with back up of Doreen Auma Okumu (Adory nyar Magunga) on his return to Kiwiro Jazz in 1997.

I can't stop listening to this. The song is about my own father, John Nyangata Odero (My name is Felix Ouma Nyangata). Dad is still alive and kicking, and enjoying his sunset days in his farm at Kasgunga together with my own mother (Nya Rusinga). We sadly had lost my step mother to death. Baba is still going about his business of selling livestock. The song was beautifully done, indeed it brings memories. Thank you Jamigori for upoading it here. I can't help but feel proud on behalf of my 13 siblings. Wamor ahinya.

Ondigo was Omollo's uncle. Omollo's father was called Oreny. Oreny ne jakuo dhok and Omollo at first did not want to associate with him. That is why he went with Omollo Kondigo, although in his songs, he partially uses his real father's name. I believe we make names for ourselves regardless of our backgrounds.
