Me and My Dad went to Finland to catch this clinic since he didn't go through Sweden in October of 1999.
My dad ended up filming the whole thing HAND held . Filmed on a Panasonic digital camera.

What a cool dad you have. Thanks for uploading this. And. I WAS THERE MAN. And for me, this clinic was one of the pivotal points in a 16-year-old dude's guitar-playing career. I wasn't that familiar with Dream Theater or John Petrucci prior to this, but a high school buddy of mine and his older brother were going and they asked me to come along (the brothers were very much into music, they had a band near Helsinki, a drummer and a guitarist, much like Van Halen - a shout out to Lustig brothers if you're reading this!). Up to this point I'd been a huuuge metallica fan and Kirk was the guy for me. After this night everything changed. John pointed me the way of practicing with a metronome, going for smaller Jazz III picks, learning scales, an overall more methodological and paying your dues approach to guitar. I even installed a DiMarzio Air Norton in my RG. The mere down to earth presence of John was so captivating. After the clinic was over, John was there to sign autographs for us outside the auditorium. I got into the long queue to wait to my turn. I noticed the guy in front of me had a guitar with him. When it finally was my turn, I didn't know much to say other than a mere "Hi", but John handled it cool and signed a black-and-white Ibanez promo shot for me. Later when I looked at the signature, it was Petrucci signature alright but also a giant silver marker test scribble that John had done before signing the guys guitar in front of me. My buddies later teased me "what's that on your signature". What unique piece that was. 23 years later, I still vividly remember moments from the clinic. Like that brave guy who walks up cold and tests John's gear in front of 200 like-minded poeple. That must've been a little hand-shaky moment. And when John was asked what he thought his weaknesses were. I've been waiting for this to be uploaded ever since I read in some old Dream Theater / guitar message board that there was a full bootleg of the clinic. Perhaps Ola himself commented this back in the day. Thanks for uploading it man!

Great tale of an encounter with this most influential of guitarists. I saw JP at a clinic in Melbourne Australia maybe 10 years ago. John was here because G3 were doing their first visit to Australia. I think the positive reception convinced, because DT itself had its first Australian tour not long afterwards. Was nerve wracking meeting my idols including JP of course, but like you I got something signed; in my case the live 'Score' DT DVD. Gee, DVD, time has flown...

@@OlaEnglund Cool Ola! I had John sign the back of the headstock on my JPM P3... that I foolishly sold to fund the new EBMM. The EBMM was an excellent guitar... but it never quite fit me like the JPM did. I still miss that Ibanez!

Black mirror, I agree to a large extent. But more than just the gear change, I miss JP's willingness to play things that are less 'metal'. There are all sorts of jazzy bits that JP used to play that simply don't seem part of his current stylistic make-up. I also miss the JP from this Ibanez era who was known to sometimes have 'solo spots' during DT shows that were almost completely unaccompanied and mostly without much in the way of effects. I'm thinking here of the awesome solo spot in the 'Five Years in a LIVETime' concert recording from the Derek Sherinian phase of DT. JP's technique and his control are on full display because rather than his more recent solo spots that are likely coated like treacle in delay and sugary keyboard pad accompaniment; this spot is raw, often without any delay or reverb. Many of us also look at JP's famous bit at the end of 'To Live Forever' from the 'Live in Tokyo' concert as an example of just how broad and wide JP's improvising CAN be, but doesn't seem to be these days.

It really seems that Petrucci somehow manage to lock himself inside a persistent and almost mathematical world of reverb and delays that tuneled his way of playing. Not saying he is a bad player, of course he’s not, but he is just not that expansive same Petrucci from “Awake” and “scenes from a memory”.

I remember Dream Theater was playing a show in Oslo around 2002 and I friend of mine and I were skipping school to attend Petrucci's guitar clinic at the local guitar shop in Oslo. We arrived and the guard told us we were the last two to be let in, (phew!). During the guitar clinic Petrucci there was a Q and A. Almost everyone raised their hands eagerly in the air to ask some technical question and for some reason he picked me to go first. I had absolutely no question prepared so I just winged it and asked: "Uhm... so how was it like to play with Steve Vai?". I could hear the collective sigh of annoyance from all the other guitar nerds in the room but John seemed more than happy to answer that "Oh, it was great". The other nerds got their questions answered eventually though, including my friend who had prepared a whole list in a notebook. Great clinic, cool guy, good times.

To me this is John at his best, I really digged the late 90s vibe, I was a kid and that was exactly what I wanted to look (and hopefully play) like once grown! And what great music he managed to put out in those few years, two LTE, Scenes from a Memory, An Evening with JP & JR... I should've convinced my father to take me to his clinic in Italy, I was planning to go to the autumn 2001 one, but it was canceled last minute for obvious reasons...
