Musician here. Just want to call some quick attention to how good John's band is. These players have some mighty good ears! They know just when and how to come in, and how to use a light touch to keep a firm hand on the music.

Doug has the pleasure of seeing them live a few years ago. His band is absolutely incredible.

I agree completely! For live, acoustic style music the musicianship is paramount to bring an impact to the audience. Just because it's not extremely complex doesn't mean it's not great music. Prine was a gutsy, honest and gifted songwriter with insight beyond most and a passion for truthful lyrics that tugged at your heart and dug to your soul. What a terrible loss, yet I was indeed blessed to have seen him live way back in the day...a true blessing.

I read an article this morning in The Atlantic (sorry, don't recall the author) that spoke to me, in regards to the importance of John's music: "Prine said he tells young songwriters to be careful of the songs they write, because they might become hits, and then they’ll have to sing them the rest of their life. There’s an extension of this: It is possible to write songs that will be with other people for the rest of their life. There’s the music you put on in your house, and there’s the kind of music in which you make your home."
