Read this play in high school English. It was probably one of three or four things I actually fully read in all four years of high school rather than using Sparknotes, because Arthur Miller had my full attention from the moment we read the first scene in class. I remember being blown away reading this scene, because of the shock that Proctor was choosing the rope, but also because of how poignant and powerful the “my name” monologue is. It’s not long, especially for a monologue in a play, but it’s so heavy. And then we watched this movie in class after finishing the reading. I knew who Daniel Day-Lewis was but hadn’t seen any of his movies at that point. I was in awe watching his performance from start to finish, but this scene has stuck with me ever since I first saw it about 15 years ago. I didn’t fully appreciate just how good this scene was until I saw a brilliant actor recite the words on the page. I’ve watched the movie 3 or 4 times in the years since, but I’ve watched this scene 50+ times.

Though the world may condemn you and dub you a demon, God always knows the truth. He sees all and he knows what is in a person’s heart. He is the one who shall never abandon or betray you even when the world has. And if you allow him to aid you, he will not let Satan have you. Even if the Lord’s other children declare you unworthy and unsaved, he will come for you. So in situations like these in which innocents have their lives taken by those manipulated by the devil, look to God. For Satan may take your body and your life but he shall never have your heart and soul if you ask God to protect you.

I just listened to a podcast from This American Life about a prisoner named Henry Dee who was up for parole after serving a life sentence for a heinous crime. Throughout his term, he would be up for parole but would continue to claim his innocence. While in jail, he never got into much trouble or showed signs of violent behavior, however, he attempted to escape twice. With the first escape, he created a fake gun and handcuffed two guards but left the key in the garbage so that they would easily be released when found. Decade after decade, parole after parole, he still claimed his innocence despite knowing if he would just admit to the crime and claim remorse, he would be released. I couldn’t help but think of this scene and how powerful it captures the act of admitting guilt when knowing one’s own innocence.
