John Reed enthusiastically performs this widely recognized and popular Gilbert and Sullivan song from 'H.M.S. Pinafore'. Dame Bridget D'Oyly directed the recording of this 1978 album.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted here by Sir Malcolm Sargent.

John Reed was surely the definitive First Lord of the Admiralty! I have heard it said that HMS Pinafore lampooned the contemporary situation in the British Navy. W H Smith, of the W H Smith railway bookselling empire and Conservative politician, was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty in 1877 despite having no naval experience. Hilariously, this tune was played by a band of the Royal Marines when Smith went to Plymouth to launch a new warship.

Great fun from the splendid John Reed. Probably the definitive version. The managers of the NHS etc have certainly taken the advice.

i have been looking for the Video of HMS Pinafore - the John Reed version. i have one small video clip that was posted on KZbin, the "why and wherefore" bit, and he was absolutely the best! There is also a clip of his portrayal of Koko singing "I have a little list" from The Mikado. But full videos of his G&S productions seem not to exist! More's the pity - he is the epitome of the characters he plays! What a great talent he had for the comic without going overboard!
