Ironically, tension IS measured in pounds
@1992jamo2 ай бұрын
@@johnhalberg6536 Is it? Tension is a force, so the unit should be a unit of force, not mass.
@johnhalberg65362 ай бұрын
@@1992jamo There are two units named pounds, pounds force and pounds mass. Together, they're very convenient for dealing with gravity. The force of gravity on one kilogram is 9.8 N, but the force of gravity on one pound (mass) is one pound (force). Extremely rare case of metric being the headache and English being easy. However, pounds force is the only unit of force in the English system, while pounds mass has to compete with slugs and stones, so by default pounds tends to mean force. It especially means force when used in the phrase, "how many pounds of tension." Alex was correct in using Newtons for force, but wrong in telling Greg force isn't measured in pounds. If you only use pounds for mass, I'm curious-- what unit did you think should be used for force in the English system?
@1992jamo2 ай бұрын
@@johnhalberg6536 That's interesting. I didn't know of pounds force as an actual distinct unit from pounds mass. I had assumed that units like ft-lb and psi were just referencing pounds mass, and the force part was inferred.
@AdamPriceOregonАй бұрын
@@1992jamo In the U.S., pounds are by default force. The customary unit of mass is the slug (1 slug = 14.6 kg) and represents the mass that would accelerate at 1 ft/s^2 if pushed with a pound of force. In practice, slug is very rarely used, in favor of the lb-mass, as @johnhalberg6536 described

A mechanical clock like that depends on the tension of either a spring or in that case weights, which is slowly released by the mechanjcs of the clock at an even rate to tick down the hours, minutes, and seconds.
