LOVED THE BOOK! if you grew up with doom and were a super fan from day one this book is a must read. I devoured it. I was sad when the book was coming to an end. I will read it again. Just buy it.

I've listened to the book on Audible, as John said, narrated by himself, its such a good book, I've found it fascinating as someone who works as a web developer, it was interesting to hear about how he learned how to program.

funny that yall mention doing paper routes as kids, because paper boy was a really good 80s computer game!

That was literally one of my all-time favorite arcade games. I could never get very far, but many a quarter went into that game lol.

It's different since it's a first-hand take, but goes way further in-depth than Masters of Doom. Both are great!

Masters of Doom is better, but this isn't bad. It has a lot more detail, but most of it is irrelevant detail or stuff you heard elsewhere.

This book is more personal, includes first hand experience, more insight on his way of dealing with everything around his job and life. I think it was worth reading it.

Love both but prefer Romero's Doom Guy. The audiobook is excellently narrated by John Romero himself.

'Is there anything John Romero can't do?'. Sure, what about not resting on his laurels. Hate to criticize the guy because he really seems so nice to get along with, but creatively he's a one-trick pony that blew his wad on Doom and hasn't contributed anything of worth to gaming since the early '90s.

I agree...I mean the most successful thing he did was SIgil..which is Doom 2 engine maps...like bro, move on. Beside that he did some tiny mobile games but compared to Carmack who inovated and played around with new tech all the time, Romero is really one dimensional. An important figure for sure but all he talks is Doom which is now almost 30 years ago.

Yeah, it’s unfortunate. He seems to have great creative potential that’s never realized while chasing his reputation from the past. His accolades past tense were legendary, hence here we are. But it’d be nice if he could do something new that has even half the creative power that his past games did.

I will always remember my 9th birthday, getting a Gameboy and realized it sucks, then 20 years later John helped Freedoom give Sigil to the world for Free with Freedoom. After I messaged him about it on my 37th birthday it was available almost instantly. I'm sure he knows what's it's like wanting a game so bad but not having enough money to buy a full PC. What a fkn legend. Thank you John. 🤘🏼🫡🫡🫡
